Popular Program Begins Open Enrollment Period

Students in the Spanish Two Way Immersion Program at San Juan Elementary School participate in a living history event.

Three Spanish language immersion programs in the District will accept applications for kindergarten students beginning Feb. 1, officials announced. Las Palmas Elementary School in San Clemente, San Juan Elementary School in San Juan Capistrano, and Viejo Elementary School in Mission Viejo will accept applications for kindergarten students from Feb. 1-10, 2012. Children must be 5 years old by Nov. 2, 2012, in order to apply. Applications for the popular language immersion programs are available at each school site. Students participating in the Spanish Two-Way Immersion (TWI) program receive instruction in both Spanish and English to develop linguistic and academic competence in both languages. Students from the two language groups (native English and native Spanish speakers) attend class together, learn from one another, and support each other’s second language acquisition.-more-

Transitional Kindergarten Program Placed on Hold

Governor Proposes Eliminating Funding

Gov. Jerry Brown released his proposed state budget for 2012-2013 this week. In it, he proposed eliminating funding for the Transitional Kindergarten program that was to coincide with a rollback of the student entry age for kindergarteners. For the 2012-2013 school year, children must be age 5 by Nov. 2, 2012 in order to enter kindergarten, The dates move up to Oct. 2 for the 2013-2014 school year and to Sept. 2 for 2014-2015. The proposed elimination of this funding jeopardizes the Transitional Kindergarten program that was to accept students who missed the cut off dates and give them, in effect, a two-year kindergarten experience. Because of the uncertainty of the funding for this program, the District has cancelled an informational meeting originally scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 10. The program is currently on hold until District officials can get a clear view of the state budget. While the governor has proposed eliminating the funding for the program, the state legislature must still approve the budget.

Updated Draft Redistricting Maps Available for Review

Board of Trustees Will Hold Public Hearing on Monday

The District this week released updated drafts of adjusted trustee area boundaries, which will be reviewed and discussed at the Board of Trustees’ meeting on Monday, Jan. 9, 2012. The drafts, drawn by National Demographics Corporation, are considered a starting point that will stimulate discussion, ideas, and direction for the consultant to develop a final plan for approval. The maps can be found online. The trustee area boundary adjustment is a process that occurs once every decade after data from the U.S. Census is updated. In addition, voters approved Measure H in November 2010 that changed the method of electing members of the Board to a “by trustee area” election process. This requires Board members to live in a particular Trustee area, and be elected by voters living within that area. The election scheduled for Nov. 6, 2012, will utilize the new method of election. While the latest drafts have been drawn using criteria approved by the Board of Trustees at its Nov. 14 meeting and refined at its discussion on Dec. 12, the plans are not final or exclusive.-more-

Castille Teacher Wins Grant

Funds Will Be Used to Increase Environmental Awareness

Castille Elementary School teacher Donna Smiggs with her fifth grade class on a boat at the Ocean Institute.

Castille Elementary School teacher Donna Smiggs recently won a $1,000 grant to increase the environmental awareness and responsibility of students from Interface, a worldwide leader in commercial and residential interior products based in Atlanta. Smiggs will use the grant to fund a three-part project that will help the school’s 119 fifth graders study local watersheds and their impact on the ocean. Students will present their findings at a Kids’ Conference hosted by the Ocean Institute in January. Ultimately, students will gain access to scientific models and equipment and a real world view and experience of actual environmental issues.

Assistance League Home Tour Raises $21K to Help Students

Group Donates Time, Money to Help Local Families

The Dickens Carolers from Dana Hills High School perform during the Capistrano Valley Assistance League’s Annual Home Tour.

The Capistrano Valley Assistance League’s 6th Annual Christmas Home Tour in December raised nearly $21,000 to help students in the District and families at Camp Pendleton. Along with the home tours, visitors were serenaded by several student musical groups from District high schools, including the Dickens Carolers from Dana Hills High School (pictured), and string quartets from Dana Hills High School and Aliso Niguel High School. The Assistance League sponsors several programs to help District students, including Operation School Bell, which provided $65,000 of clothing to nearly 800 children; Links to learning, which supplied $25,000 in classroom grants to District teachers; Kids on the Block, which gave 22 performance at 18 elementary schools; and the Hands on Literacy Project, which provides in-class assistance to special day classes at three elementary schools.
