SCHS Hosts Special Olympics Competition

Students Volunteer to Host Third Annual Event

Students compete at San Clemente High School’s Special Olympics event.

 

Special Olympics were held last week at San Clemente High School.  George Duarte, the principal expressed how pleased he was to be able to host the third annual Special Olympics.  In addition to San Clemente High School, students and staff from Dana Hills High School, Tesoro High School, and Vista Del Mar Middle School were in attendance. Events included a torch relay, the shot put, the 100m dash, long jump, swim races, tug-of-war, “fun” games including sack races, three-legged races, and hula-hoops.  Of course, the festivities concluded with an awards ceremony and closing festivities.

Cal Prep Offers Info Nights for Parents, Students

Online Classes Available

 

Parents and students interested in online education are invited to attend an information session forCalifornia Preparatory Academy, the District’s virtual high school. Sessions will be held on Tuesday, May 7, and Wednesday, June 5. All events begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be held at Cal Prep, 32972 Calle Perfecto, San Juan Capistrano.

Earth Day Essays Win Whale Watching Trips for Students

Ritz-Carlton Partners with District

 

In celebration of Earth Day 2013, The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel’s Eco-Adventure Center partnered with the District for a fifth grade Eco Hero Essay Contest. Scholars were invited to submit a 300-500 word Eco Hero essay.  Nearly 100 scholars submitted entries. The winning scholars were recognized and treated to a whale watching excursion on Dana Wharf’s Ocean Adventures catamaran. On the adventure, the scholars were able to witness three gray whales and a large pod of dolphins, all in their natural environment. Winners included: Mason Clark, Malcom; Garrett Gonzalez, Lobo; Jonathan Hale, Malcom; Skyler Kinomoto, Bathgate; Genavieve Koenigshofer, Capistrano Home School; Chase Morrison, Malcom Elementary School; Grace Pelkey, Palisades; Deevya Raman, Tijeras Creek; Angelina Rodrigo, Wood Canyon; Tara Shaw, Lobo; Isabella Sobrero, Viejo; Carli Torresm, Bathgate; Emma Trigwell, Palisades; Henri Chaudoir, Chaparral; Jake Clayton, Capistrano Home School; and Jack Fallon, Malcom.

History Day Contestants Qualify for National Competition

Middle Schoolers Named Co-Champions at State Event

 

Two Vista del Mar Middle School students have each qualified for the 2013 Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest June 9 – 13 at the University of Maryland at College Park. Amanda Rooker and Chandler Horton were named co-champions in Junior individual Performance and Junior Historical Paper, respectively. Rooker’s entry was titled “The Nine Who Said Yes We Can: A Turning Point in Integration and Education” and Horton’s paper was titled “Silent Spring: Catalyst of the Environmental Movement.” The two competed at the state National History Day competition in Sacramento last week. They were among six District students who took part. The other students were: Madison Bauman and Carni Campbell ofShorecliffs Middle SchoolRiley Croft of Bernice Ayer Middle School, and Callie Ferreira of Aliso Niguel High School.

San Clemente HS AVID Students Earn Presidential Award

Recognition Honors Volunteer Work

 

Seven students in San Clemente High School’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) have received the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Each student completed a minimum of 100 hours of community service. The President’s Volunteer Service Award is simply the latest accolade for the school’s AVID program. All 35 AVID seniors have been accepted into four-year universities. The seven students who have earned the award are: seniors Ian ChristnerDeisy GraciaAubrey HowellKassandra Jaramillo; junior Lisa Lee; and sophomores Patrick Vigil andChristopher Puckett.
