Students, Staff, and Families Donate Record Number of PJs for Needy Children

Date:

It resembled a giant slumber party as thousands of children throughout the district were encouraged to wear their pajamas to school – and it was all for a good cause.

On December 5,  CUSD hosted the 4th annual “Wear a Pair, Bring a New Pair” Pajama Day. Dress codes were lifted as students and staff wore their pajamas to school and generously donated new PJs to comfort children in need.

This year, 49 schools and the District Office collected 14,422 new pajamas for needy CUSD children, local foster care agencies, displaced families, and military households, a big increase from 2013 when district employees, students, and school families from 46 district sites donated 11,202 pajamas.

The one-day event is spearheaded by Sharon Yanaura, a fourth-grade teacher at Malcom Elementary School, in conjunction with “PJs from Heaven,” a non-profit organization she created in memory of her late son, an LAPD officer who was killed in an off-duty accident in 2006.
