Net proceeds from the community golf tournament, supported by the Aliso Viejo Community Foundation, benefits the Aliso Viejo Boys & Girls Club’s after-school programs at the Iglesia Park Community Center and the Aliso Viejo Community Foundation scholarship programs.

At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, Bob Bunyan, president of the Aliso Viejo Community Foundation, presented the $76,604 check to Mayor Carmen Cave.

“The Aliso Viejo Community Cup is a testament to the generous support and unselfish spirit of the members of the Aliso Viejo community and the city of Aliso Viejo who have given their time and financial support to help our youth,” Bunyon said.  “The contributions from this annual fundraiser help make possible the after-school, leadership training and scholarship programs through the Boys & Girls Club in Aliso Viejo and the Aliso Viejo Community Foundation.  At this, our 10-year anniversary, it is especially gratifying knowing that this event has helped many youth to find positive paths for their lives.”

The Community Cup golf tournament, which is held at the Aliso Viejo Country Club, is always a fun, action-packed event. In addition to supporting the community, hundreds of golfers tee off and compete for coveted titles and the grand “Perpetual Trophy.” Each year the trophy is awarded to the team with the lowest score.

Intended to memorialize the beginning of a new tradition in Aliso Viejo, the steering committee in 2004 selected the handsome award to carry the winning team’s name inscribed on the trophy base from year to year. The cup is prominently displayed at City Hall throughout the year as a tribute to the sponsors who share in the foundation and city’s vision to sustain a high quality of service to the children and families in town.

Cave is proud of what this event has accomplished for Aliso Viejo.

“The Community Cup has come to be a significant part of the Aliso Viejo fabric since those early tournaments I chaired before incorporation and those early years of the city, to passing the torch to chair Don Garcia who helped raise the most money in a single year and for the past several years,” she said.  “The fact that so many people have come together over the years and raised such a significant amount of money demonstrates our community’s commitment to the kids who pass through our lives.”
