Both are close by and will give a portion of the proceeds back to our school. If you are in the 4th grade, you have the choice of the strings class or the general music class which will be described at the presentation listed below. If you are in the 5th grade, you have the choice of beginning band (flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone or baritone) or intermediate orchestra (violin, viola, cello) or the 5th grade choir. CONGRATULATIONS TO COURTNEY FIELDER! Former Bergeson PTA president for 2 years, current PTA president at AVMS, mother of Lindsay Bailey and held many other volunteer duties, Courtney Fielder has been named by the City of Laguna Niguel as a local hero! Congratulations, Courtney. We’re proud of you! Here is the article that was in the OC Register this week: http://www.ocregister.com/news/years-374652-fielder-school.html

ATTENDANCE REMINDERS: It is our hope that all children will be at school unless they are sick. If it is necessary for parents to keep their children out of school for up to two weeks (minimum of five days) to travel or attend some special event, the District requests that an independent study agreement be set up between the child and the teacher. Parents should notify the attendance clerk and the clerk will create the contract for the teacher. The agreement provides children with lessons and activities to complete while away from school and helps to ensure that the students do not fall behind in their studies. The study agreement is given to the child and should be returned to the classroom teacher upon completion. Parents should provide the teacher and attendance office with at least one week notice prior to a child’s unavoidable absence from school for reasons other than illnesses. For all independent study contracts or attendance related questions, contact Angel Newell at adnewell@capousd.org.

PTA THANKS YOU: “Race for the Gold” PTA membership contest is over and it’s been a great success! We have over 375 members. 5 classes won Popsicle parties (Boys, Brewer, Hornig/Jones, Mainprize & Thomas) & Mrs. T’s class won GOLD with the TGIF lunch, Mrs. Loh’s class won silver with a pizza party and Mrs. Gray’s class won bronze and will receive a ice cream party. Congratulations to all classes and thank you for becoming a member of our Parent Teacher Association!

GREAT CALIFORNIA SHAKE-OUT: Bergeson students and staff participated in the Great California Shakeout yesterday. The purpose of the Shakeout is to encourage people and organizations to be prepared to survive and recover if the next big earthquake happens. More than 9 million people were expected to participate in the 2012 Great California ShakeOut! Students and staff did a good job in our drill. Some classes practiced to make sure they understood the need to be quiet and in control during the drill. Thank you to our staff leadership for conducting such an effective practice event.

DESTINATION IMAGINATION: We are looking to start a Destination Imagination Team at Bergeson for students in 3rd – 5th Grade. We can also have a Rising Stars Team for children in Kindergarten through 2nd grade. This program is coached by parents. If you are interested in being a DI coach with your child on the team, please contact Cindy Matsuura at CMatsuura@ocde.us. The Destination Imagination program encourages teams of learners to have fun, take risks, focus, and frame challenges while incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the arts, and service learning. Our participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process. Teams may showcase their solutions at a tournament.

BUY-BACK YOUR HALLOWEEN CANDY: Dr. Sayed is offering your students and school an opportunity to raise funds with our Halloween Candy buy Back program. When a student and parent bring their Halloween candy to our office, we will give them a $5.00 and match the $5.00 as a donation to your school.
