TLC BRANCH GETS THE KIDS GOING WITH SOME HEALTHY COMPETITION

Date:

TEAM WEEK AT THE BGCLB-TLC BRANCH

The Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach is the kind of place where every child feels accomplished when participating in their all–inclusive, non-elimination games. TLC usually structures activities around teamwork, where everyone has a role and is vital to the success of the group. TLC staff created “Team Week” with these values in mind, as well as to feed the competitive hunger that often brews in every young child.
Members were placed on a team; each team had a color and came up with a name. All week long, team members gained points for their team by not just winning games, but by showing great sportsmanship and encouraging teamwork. Cheers could be heard far from Bluebird Park as club members raced through crazy relays and battled against each other during field games like classic Steal the Bacon and new ones like Sniper (exclusive to the Bluebird Park layout, utilizing the entire park).
Every child has a chance to shine for their team whatever their talents may be. The week entailed artistic elements like drawing competitions and skits. For those who knew their way with a dictionary, they helped their team score points during the Educational Scavenger Hunt. The second graders remembered their President’s report when the team had to come up with three non-familiar presidents, and the fourth graders scored major points when they had to name state capitols.

TLC members had to use their minds, their craftiness, their athleticism and their manners to get their team to the next level. No matter who came out with the most points, the children still cheered on their friends. Third grader, Ryan Smithers, said this about the events, “Team Week is my favorite week at TLC; we get to dress in our colors and really give the games our all. It feels good to have a team cheering for you. It doesn’t really matter who wins, but I like to win, too!”

Here at the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach-TLC Branch, healthy competition and teamwork is what our activities are all about.

The Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach-TLC Branch provides engaging and enriching after school and summer programs that help build character, creativity, academic success, healthy behaviors and teamwork in young people.
