Actor and activist, Mike Farrell returns to Tapestry Unitarian Universalist on Feb. 9. at 10:00 AM. His topic is “Human Rights as a Spiritual Practice.”
Best known for his eight years on M*A*S*H and five seasons on Providence, Mike Farrell is also a writer, director and producer. He has served on human rights and peace delegations to many countries around the world.
He has served as president of Death Penalty Focus, coordinating efforts to stop executions; and received PETA’s Humanitarian Award. He also served in the U.S. Marines.
Two of his books, “Just Call Me Mike: A Journey To Actor and Activist,” and “Of Mule and Man” a journal of his five week, 9,000 mile drive around the U.S., will be available for purchase and autographs after the service. They are priced at $15 and $10, respectively.
Actor Martin Sheen describes Mike’s passion for his causes in this way: “He always makes an effort to include every point of view in a debate, and he does so with courtesy and compassion, somehow managing to personalize issues while never making it personal.”
Worship committee member, Susan Jagielko said that Mike Farrell was so well received when he spoke in 2012 about ending the death penalty, folks requested that he return to speak.
Mike Farrell describes faith in this way: “There are many different views of the proper way to express one’s faith, and I applaud those who wrestle with the questions. I particularly appreciate the seekers. This seems to me closer to the concept of true faith than that of extremists who claim to have all the answers and, content in their settled wisdom, judge and condemn those who see things differently.”
Open free to the public at 10:00 a.m. Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 23436 Madero, Suite 140, Mission Viejo. Free parking.
