Chamber urges South Orange County businesses and residents to vote NO on Mission Viejo’s Measure D
The South Orange County Regional Chambers of Commerce has announced its opposition to Mission Viejo’s Measure D, an initiative on the June ballot that would, if passed, have significant negative impacts on small businesses throughout this city, including the requirement that business owners obtain voter approval in order to to expand and grow their business through the re-zoning process. This expensive and unnecessary hurdle to business growth will hurt local Chamber members and prevent the job growth we need for an economic rebound.
Measure D was devised by those opposed to the concept of housing at the Casta Del Sol golf course south of Lake Mission Viejo. Signatures were gathered under the auspices that requiring voter approval could deter the construction of housing in this and other areas of town deemed unsuitable for such uses by this group of individuals. However, the city of Mission Viejo’s Attorney’s determined that Section 6.1 of Measure D actually exempts the development of housing –particularly if a proposed project includes subsidized housing – from the vote requirement. This leaves business owners, churches, nonprofit organizations and other property owners considering re-zoning as the true victims of Measure D.
Members of the South Orange County Chamber’s Legislative Action Committee will spearhead the education and outreach effort to Mission Viejo’s business community. Mission Viejo business owners, managers or employees interested in learning more about this anti-business initiative are encouraged to visit www.protectmissionviejo.com or contact Michael Suydam to find out how to get involved in the effort to defeat this initiative.
In TWO WEEKS, we will reveal the first “Mystery Chamber Member.” Check in next week for more details about our “Mystery Chamber Member!”
