USA diving history will be made in Mission Viejo on Saturday, September 24 as the world-renowned Nadadores diving program bids farewell to the historic diving platform at the Marguerite Aquatics Complex.  Greg Louganis, the most decorated diver in US history, a former Nadadore and Olympic gold medalist, will take the “Last Dive” from the iconic tower from which he trained with legendary coaches Ron O’Brien and Sammy Lee.

Greg will be joined by Great Britain diving Olympian Tom Daley for synchronized platform diving.  This will be a once-in-a-lifetime event the entire family will enjoy.

The event comes just before construction begins on the decades-old Marguerite Aquatics Complex. The renovation will make the complex Southern California’s only facility with the ability to host synchronized diving events.  The next chapter in Mission Viejo Nadadores diving will begin with the unveiling of the new Gilliland Diving Tower sometime in 2018.

Mission Viejo Nadadores Dive team and the City of Mission Viejo are teaming up to host an exclusive VIP event with priority seating.  General admission tickets to the show will also be available. The event takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, September 24 at 27474 Casta Del Sol.

mvhs-50logoThey say “Once a Diablo, always a Diablo.”  Indeed, thousands of students who have walked the halls of Mission Viejo High School over the last five decades would certainly agree.

In honor of the high school’s 50th anniversary, the school is hosting a special kick-off anniversary event from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 17.

Current and former Diablo families, friends, teachers, staff and community members are invited to the celebration that includes a pep assembly at 5:30 p.m., campus tours, photo ops, a museum through the decades as well as food available from Outback Steakhouse, TK Burgers and Kona Ice.

The high school is located at 25025 Chrisanta Drive. For more information, email mvhs50th@gmail.com.

metrolink-logoThe Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) is working on improving the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Metrolink Station with a project that includes enhanced passenger access and amenities.

Construction will take place during the week from 7 a.m. to 3 :30 p.m. and will be complete in mid-2017.

The work entails adding ADA compliant ramps to the existing pedestrian undercrossing as well as creating a new public restroom and space for vending machines. Three passenger canopies will be installed along the platform on the west side of the station to provide shade and protection from rain. As part of the ongoing construction, crews will excavate a portion of Camino Capistrano next to the station to relocate a sewer line. This will require reducing Camino Capistrano to one lane during working hours for up to eight weeks.

leonarddavidCommunity members on Thursday, October 27 are invited to an out-of-this-world presentation by an award-winning author who co-wrote a book with Buzz Aldrin. The City’s Writers Present program features Leonard David at 7 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center.

Penned by David—who has covered space for 50 years and co-authored “Mission to Mars” with Buzz Aldrin, “MARS: Our Future on the Red Planet” considers the imminent settlement of humans on Mars. Backed by extensive research, this stunning book is part of a major National Geographic Mars initiative this fall, including a documentary in partnership with director Ron Howard whose foreword opens the book.

The next frontier in space exploration is Mars, the red planet—and human habitation of Mars isn’t much farther off. Now the National Geographic Channel goes years fast-forward with “Mars,” a six-part series documenting and dramatizing the next 25 years as humans land on and learn to live on Mars. This companion book to the series explores the science behind the mission and the challenges awaiting those brave individuals. Filled with vivid photographs taken on earth, in space and on Mars; arresting maps; and commentary from the world’s top planetary scientists, this fascinating book will take you millions of miles away—and decades into the future—to our next home in the solar system.

In “MARS,” David investigates the red planet as never before, introducing Mars not merely as backdrop to swashbuckling science fiction but as the very real setting of humanity’s next home.

This intriguing presentation includes a question-and-answer session, and folks who purchase books on-site will receive priority book signing.

To reserve your seat, call 949-830-7100 ext. 5105 or email libreference@cityofmissionviejo.org with your contact information and number of people attending.
