Home for the Holidays3The Mission Viejo Animal Services Center is reminding pet owners to exercise caution this time of year to keep their furry family members safe.

The holidays are an exciting time with friends and family gathering for large meals and surprises under the tree.  However, several common traditions can put your pets at risk. Here are some tips to keep them safe:

Wrapped presents

Gifts are a surprising source of toxicities during the holidays. If you wrap any food (especially chocolate), dog treats or pet toys, keep the items in a safe place and well out of your pet’s reach. Pets have a keen sense of smell and will often unwrap presents early and eat the contents.

Snow globes

Some snow globes contain ethylene glycol, a highly toxic substance to all pets. If a snow globe is broken, either by a person or pet, the sweet smell can attract a pet to lick it up, leading to a potentially fatal intoxication. Snow globes should be kept out of reach of animals.

Holiday food

Pets should be kept away from food preparation areas or places where food will be left out. Some of the more concerning common food exposures during the holidays are chocolate, bread dough, fruitcake and alcohol.  Also, be sure to avoid giving pets leftover scraps of meat or fat from roasts, as these can cause gastro-upset and pancreatitis.

Salt

Salt-dough ornaments (even when dry) can be a tempting salty treat for pets, but these high levels of salt can cause life-threatening imbalances in the electrolytes.  If these are pulled off of a tree and ingested, the result can quickly be fatal.

Contact your local veterinarian or the Animal Poison Control Center if your pet gets into any of these substances.
