Wagon Wheel Math Field Day Competition
“Make Math Shine in 2009” was the slogan of this year’s Math Field Day, sponsored by the Orange County Mathematics Council, held on May 16th at Capistrano Valley High School. A fourth and fifth grade team from Wagon Wheel Elementary studied together for several months and focused on five strands of mathematics: Number Sense, Measurement & Geometry, Data, Statistics & Probability, Algebra & Functions, and Mathematical Reasoning.
When asked about being part of the fifth grade team, Annie Hall remarked, “At first, I thought it would be a lot of work and it would be boring, but it was a lot of fun and a great experience to learn new things!” The Wagon Wheel teams joined 27 other schools competing at the event and the fourth grade team was proud to take home a sixth place medal in Mathematical Reasoning. The fifth grade team was elated with their first place finish in Algebra and functions. Said the team, “Algebra was our favorite – it was one of our strengths and we practiced it a lot.”
Coaches, teachers, and parents are most proud of our Wagon Wheel “mathletes”!
