Dick Purvis, known nationwide as the “Bluebird Man” of Orange County, will be honored for his thirty plus years of restoring the native Bluebird population to Southern California and all of North America.
The recognition, in addition to many other awards he has received, will be presented by his fellow members of the Southern California Bluebird Club, www.socalbluebirds.org, at their monthly meeting Saturday, August 8 at 9:00 a.m. at the Irvine Ranch Water District building at 15600 Sand Canyon Avenue in Irvine.
The Southern California Bluebird Club was founded by Purvis and a few other monitors to restore the Western Bluebirds to Orange County after a fifty year decline.
The club builds, hangs and monitors hundreds of bluebird nest boxes in parks, cemeteries, golf courses and greenbelts throughout the county.
According to the California Bluebird Recovery Program, Orange County led the state in 2009 with over 6,200 bluebird chicks that fledged. Purvis, alone, accounted for over 1,000 of the fledglings in his 400 nest boxes.
Purvis is recognized nationwide for his expertise on the Western Bluebird. He appears on television shows, such as Huell Howser’s California’s Green, and is cited in national bird publications.
