Little league team recognized Wednesday, City hosts tournament through Aug. 11
The City Council on Wednesday honored the 2009 Aliso Viejo Little League (AVLL) 9/10-year-old All Star team for winning the District 55 All-Star Tournament.
The All Star team captured the District 55 double-elimination tournament in dramatic style. It began the summer tournament by winning its first three games, defeating the 9/10 year-old All Star teams from Laguna Hills, Newport Beach and Irvine Northwest.
Though they lost their next game by one run to a tough Rancho Niguel team, the players came back with a vengeance to capture the District 55 All Star tournament championship by winning the last three games in three consecutive days.
The All Stars, which scored the winning run in the last inning, won the championship game, 9-8 over Rancho Niguel. Throughout the tournament, the team posted six victories against one loss and averaged nearly 11 runs a game.
In other little league news, Aliso Viejo is the host city of the 2009 Little League Junior Western Region Tournament that runs through Aug. 11.
The tournament, which kicked off on Tuesday, includes state champions from throughout the Western U.S. competing in a series of games held at Woodfield Park and Aliso Niguel High School.
The public is invited to attend the games and root for its Southern California teams from Laguna Niguel and the Ventura area during the free action-packed tournament.
Games are held at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the high school and at 12:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at Woodfield Park. The semi-finals take place Monday with the final game taking place at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at Woodfield Park.
