About the Artist
Steve Bernstein is one of the newer permanent artists at Cove Gallery, joining the member-owned gallery in September 2016. Steve is the first digital artist to show work at Cove Gallery, with his photography-based work representing recognition of a new and fast-growing discipline.
“The wonderful diversity of artists and art at Cove Gallery is what sets the gallery apart from other galleries and what first attracted me to the Cove,” says Steve. “From landscapes to abstract work and watercolors, you don’t get such a wide range of art very often.”
Photography runs in Steve’s veins. His father was an architectural photographer in New York, and his grandparents were also photographers in its infancy.
An accomplished scientist and inventor, Steve’s career has been driven by imagery. His work has ranged from exploring the secrets of marine bioluminescence in deep-sea submersibles to developing and working with robotics and imaging techniques in medical research.
Simple, bold and graphic, with a real emphasis on color, Steve’s work combines two of his major passions – photography and computers. While each of Steve’s pieces begins as a photograph, it is transformed into a work of art using a bewildering array of digital tools and techniques.
Steve’s art is all about delighting the eyes and stimulating the soul. “I feel I have succeeded if I create art that people want in their homes and in their lives every day,” says Steve.
Steve has had an active 2017 so far. With friend and colleague, world-renowned marine biologist Dr Edie Widder, Steve exhibited Illuminating the Deep for three months at the Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta, Florida. A collaboration between Steve and Edie, Illuminating the Deep is an exciting exhibition about the mysteries of the deep and the wonderful and bizarre creatures that inhabit the planet’s last frontier, including the Giant Squid. Illuminating the Deep has already had successful seasons at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California, Vancouver Aquarium in Canada and the Elliott Museum in Stuart, Florida. You can see more about Illuminating the Deep at www.facebook.com/IlluminatingTheDeep.
Besides exhibiting at Cove Gallery, Steve’s work resides in private collections in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, as well as the offices of the Secretary of State, Florida, and the Official Residence of the New Zealand Consul-General, Los Angeles.
Come meet Steve in person at the June Laguna First Thursday Art Walk Reception on Thursday,
June 1, 2017 from 6 – 9 pm in the Cove Gallery.
