“Keys to the Future” Car Raffle Winner Announced Annual
This past Tuesday evening, at 8:05 p.m., at Capistrano Toyota, the winning ticket was drawn to determine who would win the 2010 Toyota Prius donated by Roger Hogan, owner of Capistrano Toyota.

Over 200 anxious attendees gathered around as the raffle barrel containing the tickets was carried by Scot Ross, CUSD Foundation Board of Directors member, from the private office where the ticket audit had occurred, to the waiting crowd. A young child about 4 years of age was randomly chosen from the audience to draw the winning ticket. As this child stood on a chair to draw the ticket, Mr. Ross gave the barrel a final spin.

As Emcee Curt Visca read the name on the ticket, Robert Gonzales, the crowd looked around to see where the winner was. The name was announced again. As it became clear that the winner was not present, Enzo Scognamiglio, CUSD Foundation Board of Directors President, called Mr. Gonzales on the phone to tell him the good news.

On speakerphone Mr. Gonzales could be heard saying, “Really! I won the car! I’ve never won anything in my whole life!”

As it turns out, Mr. Gonzales is a CUSD employee who works in the maintenance department. His wife works nights while he stays home to care for their three young children, which is the reason he was not able to attend the drawing.
Over 1300 tickets were sold for $50 each or 3 for $125 for a chance to win the car which was fully donated by Roger Hogan.

Mr. Gonzales had purchased a single ticket, hoping it would be the lucky one, which it turned out, in fact, to be.

A portion of each ticket purchased could be designated to a particular school or program of the purchaser’s choice, or to the CUSD Foundation to be placed into the general fund, used to support programs throughout the district in the areas of technology, music, art, science, literacy, and athletics.

Prior to the drawing, beginning at 6:30 p.m., a reception was held where ticket purchasers and their family could enjoy complimentary food and beverages from Brio Tuscany Grille in Monarch Beach, Savannah Chop House in Laguna Niguel, Stella’s Italian in Monarch Beach, Hapa J’s in San Clemente, Wingnuts in Aliso Viejo, Sandella’s Flatbread Café also in Aliso Viejo, Lucille’s BBQ in Lake Forest, and Sundried Tomato in San Juan Capistrano.

While enjoying the delicious food, guests were entertained by the Dana Hills High School Orchestra and the San Clemente High School Madrigals.
On behalf of over 51,000 students in 56 schools, the CUSD Foundation would like to thank ticket purchasers and sponsors for their continued support of quality education for all children.

The CUSD Foundation congratulates Mr. Robert Gonzales and his family and looks forward to seeing him in his new Toyota Prius!
