Featured Laguna Beach High School Artists

for May – June 2018 – CHLOE LEVINE and AMY YOU

The first six months of Cove Gallery’s “Young Artist” partnership with Laguna Beach High School has seen six young talented artists show their work at the gallery and get a taste of a “total gallery experience.” From the line drawings of Zander Raymond, one of the first students in the program, to the ceramic work of Camille DeMilly Otteson shown over the past two months, the work shown by these young artists has wowed visitors to the gallery, and several of the students have sold their art. To date, Cove Gallery is honored to have exhibited the art of Zander and Camille, along with Sophia Diaz Anderson, Saylor Petzholdt, Shea Skenderian, and Ella Steinbach.

Two new students will be introduced at the upcoming First Thursday’s Art Walk on May 3, 2018. Both Chloe Levine and Amy You are based in Laguna Beach attending Laguna Beach High School and will be showing their work at the gallery and learning about how a gallery works from top to bottom.

According to Bridget Beaudry-Porter, Art Teacher at Laguna Beach High School, “We’re very excited to work with Cove Gallery on this unique opportunity. It gives our emerging young artists first-hand experience of gallery life and great exposure of their work. Chloe and Amy are the fourth group of students to be involved in this innovative program.”

Steve Bernstein, one of the permanent artists at Cove Gallery, said the gallery is “proud to be helping nurture and encourage such talented young artists in the Laguna Beach community.”

Chloe Levine – Artist Biography

Levine was born and raised on the beaches of Laguna Beach. Despite Laguna being a bubble, she has traveled the world with her family experiencing different cultures and environments with her family. Ever since Levine was a little girl, she was glued to a sketchbook, drawing animals (mostly horses) and cartoons. Soon her crayons were traded in for pencils, and pencils traded in for paint. Since then she has continued her love for art throughout her high school career. She plans to attend Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon this coming fall, majoring in Environmental Studies with a minor in Studio Art/Design.

Artist Statement – Growing up on the beach and my father being a biologist, I have always felt a strong connection with nature and animals. I was raised in the sand observing the natural wildlife and grew to love animals, while simultaneously developing myself as an artist. That is why with my work I intend to incorporate my love for the natural world and my passion for painting and self-expression. The many colors, shapes, and forms found in nature I try to highlight in my artwork.

Amy You

Artist Biography –  You is a senior from Laguna Beach High School. Her first art teacher taught her that all art must have a quality of life to it. This continues to influence her style and the bond she feels with each piece she creates. She also likes to draw dragons in her free time.

Artist Statement – My artwork revolves around socio-economic issues and world events that affect the future of our generation. I create my artworks with the desire to raise awareness and suggest solutions to the problems I study about and view in the media. I use traditional watercolor and ink techniques with Chinese Shan-shui painting to create simple, illustration-like pieces to cover many aspects of events while suggesting that only through collaboration can we better our world.

The Grand Opening and first showing of the student’s work will be inside the Cove Gallerys’ “First Thursday’s Laguna Beach Art Walk” on Thursday, May 3, 2018, 6 pm – 9 pm Come meet our two new Student Young Artists, Chloe and Amy, and view their latest works, along with those of the permanent Cove Gallery artists and their original art!
