Steve Bernstein, Cove Gallery’s Artist of the Month for July 2018, is showcasing digital art produced from one quite remarkable week in the Yucatan. At the heart of Bernstein’s work are photographs of life in the Yucatan, transformed into digital works of art.
During the time that Bernstein spent in the Yucatan, he traveled to areas off the beaten track. It was in Tizimin that Bernstein saw some children heading home from school, all looking positively angelic dressed in their school uniforms. The photograph he took of the children became his enchanting piece “L’il Angels.” Walking around, he also saw many unusual dwellings, and his photograph of one house formed the basis of his piece “The Castle.” This image reflects the idea that however humble the abode, it is a home.

Moving to Valladolid, Bernstein was captivated by an everyday corner scene, with a couple of women standing outside a bar, which can be seen in his piece “La Joya.” Another piece from the photos Bernstein took in Valladolid was included in Cove Gallery’s recent Unity: Imagine exhibition.
As Cove Gallery’s Artist of the Month, Bernstein’s Yucatan series will be front and center in the window at Cove Gallery. You can read more about Bernstein and his art on the Cove Gallery website www.covegallerylaguna.com. Bernstein will also be at Cove Gallery during July Laguna First Thursdays Art Walk, Thursday, July 5, 2018, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm.
About Steve Bernstein:
Photography runs in Bernstein’s veins. His father was an architectural photographer in New York, and his grandparents were also photographers in its infancy.
An accomplished scientist and inventor, Bernstein’s career has been driven by imagery. His work has ranged from exploring the secrets of marine bioluminescence in deep-sea submersibles to developing and working with robotics and imaging techniques in medical research.

Simple, bold and graphic, with a real emphasis on color, Bernstein’s work combines two of his major passions – photography and computers. Each piece is created from a digital photograph and then enhanced and transformed into a work of art using an assortment of digital filtering techniques and on- Stevereen painting.
Bernstein’s art is all about delighting the eyes and stimulating the soul. He feels he has succeeded if he creates art that people want in their homes and in their lives every day.
His work resides in private collections in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, as well as the offices of the Secretary of State, Florida, and the New Zealand Consul-General’s Official Residence, Los Angeles.
