Pacific Symphony Pops is joined by Papa Doo Run Run for “Good Vibrations: a Beach Boys Tribute

Date:

GET A JUMP START ON SUMMER! FINAL POPS CONCERT OF PACIFIC SYMPHONY’S SEASON DELIVERS “GOOD VIBRATIONS” WITH QUINTESSENTIAL BEACH BOYS-TRIBUTE BAND—PAPA DOO RUN RUN

2010—Beach party! Get in the mood for summer with Pacific Symphony Pops and Grammy-nominated surf band Papa Doo Run Run, when “Good Vibrations: a Beach Boys Tribute” features the band members that the Beach Boys themselves call when they need a musician.

The band rocks the house for this final Symphony Pops concert of the 2009-10 season, with Beach Boys favorite tunes such as “Good Vibrations,” “California Girls” “I Get Around,” “Help Me Rhonda,” “Barbara Ann,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” and “Surfin’ U.S.A.” Led by Principal Pops Conductor Richard Kaufman on Thursday-Saturday, May 6-8, at 8 p.m, in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, the concert’s first half features more surf-soaked and sun-drenched tunes, including arrangements of Brian Wilson’s “In My Room” and “Warmth of the Sun,” as well as Elmer Bernstein’s “Hawaii Overture” and a suite of music from the hit movie trilogy, “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Tickets are $25-$150; for more information or to purchase tickets, call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.pacificsymphony.org.

“There’s nothing like the music of the ’60s to create a wild time in the concert hall,” says Maestro Kaufman, “and that’s what the audience will experience with Pacific Symphony and Papa Doo Run Run at this exciting finale to our 2009-10 pops season. One of the great things about Orange County is life at the beach, and the sound of Papa Doo Run Run definitely brings the fun and excitement of surfing to life. It’s going to be a real symphonic beach party!”
The Beach Boys’ incredibly popular music included 36 U.S. Top 40 hits (the most of any U.S. rock band) and 56 Hot 100 hits, plus four number-one singles. Rollingstone magazine listed the group as No. 12 in the 100 Greatest Artists of All Times. And, according to Billboard, in terms of singles and album sales, The Beach Boys are the No.-1-selling American band of alltime. So it’s no wonder other bands want to play their music and emulate them! But arguably the group to do it best is Papa Doo Run Run.

Formed in 1965, the California band that started as a Top 40 rock-and-roll cover band called “Goodie Two Shoes,” Papa Doo Run Run quickly discovered its forte—they sounded just like The Beach Boys! That sound led the band members to surf-music icons Jan and Dean, and from 1976-1980, they toured North America with the duo. In the 1980s, Papa Doo Run Run graduated from Jan and Dean to The Beach Boys, and toured and recorded with members of the original band throughout the next two decades. The group also had an unprecedented 15-year run as the “Celebrity House Band” at Disneyland from 1975-90.

Papa Doo Run Run’s 1975 Top 40 hit “Be True To Your School” reached No. 1 in California and their CD “California Project” (1985) earned the band their second Gold Record and a Grammy nomination. Additionally, the band appeared in and recorded the soundtrack album for the CBS-TV movie “Deadman’s Curve.” The band currently has 10 CD releases and a full-length DVD. On Oct. 19, 2007, Papa Doo Run Run was inducted into the Northern California/Silicon Valley Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

Pacific Symphony’s Pops series is made possible by its official airline, American Airlines; official hotel, The Westin South Coast Plaza; Pops media sponsor, the Los Angeles Times; official Pops radio station, K-Earth 101; and official television station, KOCE-TV.
