USS McClusky Returns to A Rousing Welcome
To rousing cheers of “Welcome Home” and “We Missed You” the USS McClusky returned to San Diego on April 5th following a six month deployment.
The ship arrived promptly at 10:00 a.m. to the continuous cheers of relatives and friends waiting anxiously on the shoreline for the return of their sons, daughters, husbands and fiancés.
About 150 people waved American flags and held banners and home-made signs – many reading “Welcome Home Daddy” and “We Missed You.” It was a very joyous occasion, especially for the mothers with new babies and all the small children.
The guided-missile frigate was deployed to the Fourth Fleet Area of Responsibility, which includes the Caribbean, Central and South America. While deployed, the ship performed a variety of tasks including the seizure or disruption of more than 11 metric tons of cocaine, with an estimated street value of more than $810 million, and detained 13 suspected narcotic smugglers, according to the Navy.
In addition, while in Panama and Costa Rica, sailors from the McClusky contributed more than 400 man hours to community relations projects by refurbishing a host nation school and summer camp for underprivileged children, as well as delivering medical supplies donated by Project Handclasp.
Mayor Linda Lindholm, Council Member Robert Ming and Laguna Niguel Military Support Committee Members (LNMSC) Carole Allen and Hugh Fryling also attended the homecoming and proudly displayed a giant banner that read “Welcome Home USS McClusky. From the City of Laguna Niguel”. They had the privilege of being escorted onto the ship to meet with the Captain and the Executive Officer as they gave their wives red roses and their children special small gifts they had been saving for them. The Captain and crew were exceptionally gracious and thanked the City of Laguna Niguel for all its support.
Thanking them for all they do in service to our country, the LNMCS representatives said their goodbyes and left the officers and crew to enjoy the time with their families.
Their motto, “Persistent, Courageous, and Victorious!” continues to be an inspiration to all. Welcome Home USS McClusky – It’s great to have you back!
