THE PARENT PROJECT
While the overwhelming majority of parents with high risk youth deeply
care about their children, most parents simply do not know how to intervene
when their children need them the most.

The Parent Project® was specifically designed to address the critical issues
parents face today, and offer practical, no nonsense solutions. Because of
its success in preventing, identifying, and intervening with the most
destructive behaviors, the Parent Project® has won three state awards in
California and has been adopted for use by school districts and communities
throughout the nation.

Please visit the CVES website for more information and down load a flyer.

FURLOUGH DAYS
Due to the increasing budget crisis the Capistrano Unified School District is experiencing, the Board of Trustees has implemented three furlough days; days when all school sites and district offices will be closed. Students do not attend school on furlough days. A fourth furlough day will occur on a current non-student day. All meetings and school events will cancelled on these days. An updated calendar will be posted on the CVES website, along with an updated Quick Reference Calendar.

The following days have been selected as furlough days:
• Friday, May 28 . . . . . . . . day prior to Memorial Day weekend
• Tuesday, June 1 . . . . . . . day following Memorial Day weekend
• Friday, June 11
• Thursday, June 24 . . . . . . day after last student instructional day.

Union: Strike sends message to other districts
Music blared across the blacktop at Las Palmas Elementary as teachers, parents and students celebrated the end of a three-day strike with hugs, applause and plenty of woot woots. “For the first time in a long time I can actually say this and mean it – Good Morning!” Principal Kristen Nelson shouted to an audience of cheering students, parents and teachers at the San Clemente school. “Today, we welcome back our stars.” The five-day standoff between the Capistrano Unified School District and its teachers union ended late Monday when negotiating teams agreed to a three-year deal modifying a 10.1 percent pay cut imposed on teachers in March.

Strike was symptom of long-term distrust
Capistrano Unified School District teachers are proclaiming victory after three days of striking, saying “we can hold our heads high.” District officials, meanwhile, are touting a tentative settlement agreement reached with teachers late Monday as “providing consistency and stability” for Orange County’s second-largest school district. But the long-term impacts of the five-day standoff over a 10.1 percent pay cut are probably best described in less rosy terms, observers say. The picketing, the angst, the anger all may be signs of a school community nowhere close to healing, and the fleeting jubilation both sides are feeling in the wake of Monday’s tentative settlement may simply revert to distrust and discontent in the days ahead.
