Laguna Niguel Passes Resolution in Support of Ordinance to Ban Sale of Flavored E-Cigarette Products
At the Tuesday, October 1, 2019, City Council Meeting, the Laguna Niguel City Council unanimously passed Resolution 2019-1300 as a first step in banning the sale of all flavored electronic cigarette products within the City.
“Our utmost priority is the safety and protection of Laguna Niguel citizens. Our most vulnerable, especially children, deserve our unwavering attention, action and support. That is why we passed this Resolution,” said Laguna Niguel Mayor John Mark Jennings. “Parents and their children, alike, should be made aware of the proven dangers of the use of flavored e-cigarettes. And to this point, throughout our country, there have been far too many instances of injury, illness, and even death for us not to take action.”
Since 2014, electronic cigarettes have become the most commonly used tobacco product among youth in the United States. In fact, between 2011 and 2018, e-cigarette use increased by 1,200% among middle and high school students. These products contain nicotine, a combination of additives, and toxic chemicals that are shown to create long-lasting damage to a user’s mental and physical health. On September 19, 2019, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that e-cigarette products have resulted in at least seven deaths and several hundred cases of lung illnesses.
“This is an epidemic. An epidemic that must be and can be beat at the source. That’s what we are doing. Through the passage of this Resolution and the Ordinance that follows, acquiring this harmful product will be harder than ever before,” Jennings said.
As a result of the passage of Resolution 2019-1300, an Ordinance banning the sale of flavored e-cigarette products will be presented to the City Council at the November 5, 2019 City Council meeting.
