Go on a journey of self-discovery with Emil and the Detectives April 4 and 5 in Samueli Theater as part of the Center’s imaginative 2019-2020 Family Series. Australia’s celebrated Slingsby Theatre Company performs a poignant coming-of-age story that combines the thrilling intrigue of a classic mystery caper with an evocative film noir design, complete with smoke and mirrors, miniature worlds and a cinematic score. Based on the 1929 novella by German writer Erich Kästner, Emil & the Detectives explores the value of friendships, taking risks and the empowerment of young people.
Audiences are encouraged to arrive one hour before the performance for free creative activities. For these performances, Samueli Lobby will be transformed into Newtown train station and arriving audiences of all ages will be greeted by train attendants and invited to help rebuild the city through a variety of activities.

About Emil and the Detectives
Young Emil catches a train to visit family, but something valuable is stolen and Emil ends up alone in the big city, lost and desperate. A group of quick-thinking and resourceful children rallies around him, and the thief soon discovers Emil was not such an easy target. Can a bunch of kids work together to uncover and outsmart the criminal?
About Slingsby Theatre Company
Co-founded in 2007 by Artistic Director Andy Packer, Slingsby is an Adelaide-based company that produces and tours original theatre that captivates, challenges and inspires international audiences of adults and young people. In 10 years, Slingsby has produced and premiered seven original productions and won 14 industry awards. They have an outstanding international reputation as artistic leaders, having performed in 83 venues in 57 cities across 10 countries and growing. Segerstrom Center’s Education Department reaches nearly 300,000 individuals throughout Southern California each year with a variety of programs designed to create sustainable creative arts experiences for children, teachers and families. These education programs focus on providing equitable access to the arts for students and families in our region and include extensive workshops, performances and residencies at schools and community organizations, performances for students and families at the Center as well as professional development for teachers and students.
