State Funding to Provide More Housing to
Veterans in San Diego and Orange Counties
SACRAMENTO – Senator Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) announced today that the State of California has awarded almost $20 million to help house military veterans in San Diego and Orange counties who are or at risk of becoming homeless.“Our military veterans have made significant sacrifices to serve our country and no one should be left behind,” said Senator Bates, a member of the Senate Housing Committee. “I am grateful that projects in San Diego and Orange counties will receive additional voter-approved funding to house more veterans who are struggling to keep a roof over their heads. This funding is another step in the right direction to take care of every veteran.”The Post 310 Project in San Diego County will receive $9.2 million and the North Harbor Village project in Orange County will receive $10 million. These grants are part of more than $83 million in the latest round of funding to help create housing opportunities for veterans.

The program’s funding comes from Proposition 41, passed by California voters in 2014 to provide $600 million for the development of affordable housing for veterans and their families. The awards go to qualified developers and nonprofits to build, acquire, rehabilitate or preserve affordable multifamily housing. The latest round of awards will help fund projects in 10 California counties and will create a total of 421 units for veterans.

The California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA), and the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) administer the Veterans Housing and Homelessness Prevention Program (VHHP) that awards the grants.
