Massive Project Completed by 16-year Old Linebacker, Wes Hartman

Date:

The Crew and Finished Logo

It all started last summer, when Wes Hartman, 16-year-old linebacker for the Mission Viejo Varsity High School football team, came up with a grand vision to create a school landmark for his Eagle Project. It was no easy task, but with 9 months in planning, 90 volunteers over four Saturdays totaling 350 hours of service, it was finally complete on May 1, 2010.

When Wes approached the school about the project they were very supportive, but due to budget constraints they could donate no funds to the projects, but they were able to donate the Mission Viejo turf logo from the old football field. “The tree stumps were the biggest challenge in the project. The City of Mission Viejo came and cut the stump down so that we could finish the project,” said Wes Hartman. Wes had an idea that people in the community would be willing to help donate if they knew his plan and they did just that. All resources and services were generously donated by Synthetic Lawns Concept, DJ Gregg Services (delivery of gravel), Waste Management, Home Depot (MV), Trabuco Canyon Water District, Jersey Mikes Subs (MV) and McDonalds (MV).

Jim Taylor from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints leads troop 752 as the Venturer Crew Leader. He said, “We have done ambitious projects from our troop in the past but I think this one is literally “king of the hill”. This is a commercial style project that would be a challenge for people in the industry. Wes pulled the materials, labor and schedules together to make this happen.” The school landmark will be seen by every sporting event held in the school’s stadium. It will be a permanent landmark to the school to be enjoyed for years to come.
