Ocean Institute Presents 26th Annual Toshiba Tall Ships Festival

Dana Point, CALIF., – The Ocean Institute will present its 26th annual Toshiba Tall Ships Festival, the largest annual gathering of tall ships on the West Coast, the weekend of September 10-12, 5-7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday & Sunday.

Come and explore the majesty and wonder of tall ships through the smells, sounds and sights of real working tall ships. Interactive living-history encampments, including blacksmiths, scrimshaw artists, and the infamous Port Royal Privateers, are sure to entertain and amaze guests of all ages.

Inside the Ocean Institute, explore our work on protecting the local watersheds through hands-on labs and art activities as you get up-close and personal with some of the ocean’s most amazing sea creatures, including sea stars, jellies, rays and octopus.

Exciting new events at this year’s festival:
• Discover the world of the California Indians while enjoying interactive presentations from award-winning educator Jacque Nunez.
• Sea of Light photography by Richard Salas on display.
• Come face to face with one of the most mysterious creatures of the deep as Ocean Institute scientists lead the dissection of a gigantic Humboldt squid (Sunday only).
• Learn about the ancient arts of the mariner, with special demonstrations by scrimshaw artists, the Orange County Woodcarvers, and the International Guild of Knot Tyers.
• Join in on an interactive pirate school, where young scallywags can learn to talk, walk, and sing like pirates.
• Explore the past of Dana Point Harbor during a complete reading of Richard Henry Dana Jr.’s famous novel Two Years Before the Mast by the Dana Point Historical Society.

12th Annual Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta, September 9-12 – During the weekend of the 2010 Tall Ships Festival, the Dana Point Yacht Club will present the 12th Annual Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta benefiting the Ocean Institute. The Regatta includes a Marine Corps Twilight Fishing Tournament, a Sponsor and VIP reception/dinner held at the Ocean Institute, racing for PHRF, non-spinnaker, and junior sabot classes, and a gala dinner and auction at the Dana Point Yacht Club.
