Remembering September 11th – A Tribute To The Victims Of The 9/11 Terrorist Attacks
The public is invited to attend the September 11th Remembrance event on Saturday commemorating the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The event begins at 6:30pm and will take place at the Crown Valley Community Park Amphitheater.
Local leaders and representatives from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Orange County Fire Authority and Armed Forces will gather to honor and pay tribute to all those who lost their lives in the worst terrorist attack in US history.
Those attending are invited to bring along an item to donate to the City’s Military Support Committee Care Package Drive. Donated items will be packaged and shipped to the First Battalion, Fourth Marines currently deployed overseas. Items needed include:
Body Wash, Razor Blades, Shaving Cream, Moist Wipes, Tooth Paste and Brushes, Dental Floss, Chapstick, Foot Powder, Nail Clippers, Batteries – AA & AAA sizes, Sun Screen, Insect Repellent, DVD’s – Movies, NFL Films, Fighting Championships, Playing Cards and Dominoes, Nutrition Bars, Protein Bars, Hard Candy, Beef Jerky, Gatorade & Crystal Lite Powders, Hot Sauce, Sukodu Puzzles, Magazines – car, gun, sports.
City Council Approves Plans and Specifications For The Crown Valley/1-5 Widening Project
The City Council on Tuesday night approved the plans and specifications for the Crown Valley/1-5 Widening Project. The project will widen Crown Valley from Cabot Road to the I-5 northbound ramps. The project will add a dedicated right turn lane (beginning at Forbes Road) for the southbound ramp, a dedicated right turn lane for the northbound ramp and four continuous eastbound through lanes from Cabot to match the current four through lanes that begin in Mission Viejo at the northbound ramp. Once completed this project will significantly reduce congestion and will provide additional capacity for future developments in the Gateway area.
The Crown Valley/I-5 Widening Project is a joint project of the Cities of Laguna Niguel and Mission Viejo. The current construction cost estimate for the full project is $12 million and the cities have secured a $5 million grant from the Orange County Transportation Authority. Additional project funds are being sought from the Federal government and other sources. The project is tentatively scheduled to begin in March 2011 and will take approximately 18-24 months to complete.
City Council Proclaims
Constitution Week
City Council Members voted Tuesday night to proclaim September 17-23, 2010 as Constitution Week in the City of Laguna Niguel. The tradition of celebrating the Constitution was started many years ago by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR.)
In 1955, the DAR petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually in observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into law on August 2, 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The U.S. Constitution is the basis for America’s heritage and the foundation for our way of life. It gives us the right to hear and read news without government censorship; we are free to worship as we choose; we can vote for those who will lead us, and speak freely without fear. In short, it gives us freedom.
