We had a fantastic first week of school! Students are ready, teachers are ready and we’ve enjoyed getting reacquainted with all of our favorite friends.
Thank you for having great children. It is an honor to help them each and every day! We have a great deal of news in today’s version of the BARK.
School has started and we’re up and running with gusto!

PATRIOT DAY, IN REMEMBRANCE
Thank you to the Bergeson Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and their leaders for leading us in a beautiful flag salute commemorating Patriot’s Day today and in remembrance of the victims and heroes of the September 11 terrorist attacks against the United States. We will always remember our collective obligation to ensure that freedom prevails, and that the principles upon which our Nation was founded endure. Inspired by the heroic sacrifices of our firefighters, rescue and law enforcement personnel, military service members and other citizens, our Nation found unity, focus, and strength. From the tragedy of September 11 emerged a stronger Nation, renewed by a spirit of national pride and a true love for our great country.

STUDENT DISCIPLINE AND SAFETY ASSEMBLIES
Today, our students participated in our annual discipline assembly and Mrs. Scholl reviewed many school rules including the playground, classroom and other behavior expectations for students in grades 1 – 5. Various other topics were reviewed such as rewards and consequences for student behavior, Character Counts traits, dress code and other guidelines that we follow in school. Ask your child to tell you about it this weekend. Respect, Responsibility and Ready to Learn are our “3 R’s for Success”!

FOOTPRINT FRIDAYS
Our first Footprint Friday was a HUGE success today with 30 or 40 students who brought in cans and plastic bottles to donate to our school for recycling! We made it into the OC Register newspaper, too! http://www.ocregister.com/news/school-264434-students-footprint.html Every Friday, students will be rewarded for bringing in recyclables to the front lawn only during morning drop off. We are teaching our children to recycle while earning some money for our school. Maybe your neighbors would like to donate their recyclables to our school and you could pick it up on Thursday or Friday to bring to school, too? Thank you to our Footprint Friday leaders and creators Tammy Orrill (jayntam@cox.net) and Jamie Warth (WARTH3@cox.net). We appreciate their efforts in getting this program started. The program is sponsored by our Bergeson Foundation and all funds raised will be used for the benefit of Bergeson School. Reducing the carbon footprint from all of us who live on the earth is an important lesson for future generations. Save your plastic and aluminum (no glass) with our thanks!

LOOKING FOR A SIMPLE WAY TO SUPPORT BERGESON?
BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION and LABELS FOR EDUCATION are easy ways to raise money and supplies for our school. Simply clip the Box Tops for Education and Labels for Education coupons off participating products and send to school with your child. Collection envelopes are in each classroom and in the front office. Visit the websites to lean more ways to earn money and supplies for Bergeson. www.boxtops4education.com and www.labelsforeducation.com any questions? email Emily at grodahl1@cox.net. Thanks for participating!

RALPH’S SUPERMARKET FUNDRAISER
The easiest fundraiser that we have is our Ralph’s Supermarket Fundraiser. Attach your Ralph’s card to our school, and our school receives 4 – 8% back from your purchase. Look for a new flyer which is coming home this week; take the flyer into Ralph’s and they’ll connect it to your card. Even if you did this last year, you’ll need to make sure to attach it again this September so that our school receives the benefits. You can also go to www.ralphs.com; click on Community Contributions; then click on “Participants” and follow the prompts to attach your account to Bergeson School. We have to be creative these days to combat the crazy shrinking State budgets.

PTA MEETING ON THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 16 8:00AM IN THE MPR
Please come to our first meeting of the year and hear about all the exciting upcoming events this month while you enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast! We’re going to preview our brand new line of spiritwear clothing and we need your help choosing the designs, colors and sizes to roll out October 1st. Please visit our website at www.bergesonpta.org for more information, and to download all of our order forms, including membership. Please join the PTA today and help support important school programs, such as our Science Lab!

DIRECTORY ARTWORK DUE BY FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17TH
Put your best paw forward and submit your child’s artwork for inclusion in the PTA Directory. This year our theme is “Connected for Kids” and artwork should feature our school mascot, the Bulldog. Get connected with your school, teachers, fellow students and local community services and be sure to place your PTA Directory order by September 30. If you have any questions, please contact Colleen Shissler at colleen-marie@sbcglobal.net.

SCREAMING COUPONS
Sign up for free and get one unbeatable deal per day in Orange County for 50% to 90% off of the best local merchants and our school receives $1.00 for every sign up! Click here to easily sign up but make sure to name Bergeson School. http://www.screamindailydeals.com/ Right now, we’re in a contest with other local schools to win a $500 Staples gift card if we get the most sign ups per student population, so please sign up today — we need your help to purchase much needed office supplies if we win the gift card! Sign up your family and friends, too but just be sure to select Marian Bergeson Elementary school to receive the rewards! If you have any questions, please contact Evelyn Riyhani at evelynr0311@aol.com.

GIRL SCOUT INFORMATION NIGHT
Is your daughter interested in becoming a Girl Scout? Come to our Parent Information Night on Tuesday, September 21st at 6:00PM in the MPR here at Bergeson. Bring your daughter for some fun crafts while you learn more about Girl Scouting and how your daughter can join. Girl Scouts is for girls K through 12th grade. For more information, please contact Tina Conrad at theconradsare@cox.net.

WELCOME BACK CELEBRATION
Thank you to the PTA, President Evelyn Riyhani and her officers for organizing this special event on the Tuesday prior to school opening and also on Wednesday morning. It was fantastic to see everyone again!

RIDESHARE 2 SCHOOL
Dozens of families are signing up to carpool by filling out the Rideshare 2 School form so that you can be matched up with a carpooler in your neighborhood. Just for signing up, you get a $10 Starbucks Card but most importantly, you’ll save time, fuel, make friends, reduce traffic and create a safer, less crowded commute around our school. If you need extra forms, they’re in the office.

RALPH’S PARKING LOT
You are welcome to park in the Ralph’s Shopping Center’s parking lot in designated parking spots. Please do not park in the middle of the truck drive-through area. This is a tow-away zone and cars will be towed. We want to remain good partners with our neighbors next door. On Wednesday, the first day of school, there were trucks that could not get in or out of the lot because they were blocked in by cars which weren’t parked in the designated parking spots. The Ralph’s store is fined when a truck can’t make their delivery in a timely manner. Because our Ralph’s Supermarket donates a great deal to our school each year, we want to make sure to reciprocate by keeping this parking situation under control. Thank you for your help.

FREE BACKPACKS OFFERED TO BERGESON STUDENTS
Please contact the school office if your child would benefit from a free backpack filled with basic school supplies. These backpacks were generously donated by Saddleback Church.

PETER PAN (LAST CHANCE!)
We have acquired a group discount for the production of Peter Pan at the Orange County Performing Arts Center which is a theatre-in-the-round experience on October 10, 2010, Sunday at 1 PM. Each ticket is $46 (which is a 10% discount from regularly priced seats) and they are very good seats in Section E. If you are interested, make out a check to “OCPAC” and turn into the Bergeson office by September 15. The Bergeson group will sit together. The description from the website: “A spectacular new production of JM Barrie’s classic story direct from engagements in London and San Francisco – conceived by an award-winning creative team, this smash hit production features the original London cast including Titanic star, Jonathan Hyde as Hook and Abby Ford (Harry Potter) as Wendy plus amazing puppets, epic music, dazzling flying scenes and the world’s first 360-degree CGI theatre set. Performed in a state-of-the-art theater pavilion, this magical new “in-the-round” production of Peter Pan is an extraordinary experience for the whole family.”

CELEBRATION BOOKS LIBRARY DONATION
Purchasing a book for the Bergeson Library is a great way to honor your child’s birthday, applaud a major accomplishment, recognize good grades or just proclaim your child as an outstanding Bergeson Bulldog. In recognition of your donation to the library, your child is recognized by Principal Scholl during the Friday morning flag salute and a “Book Plate” will be affixed to the inside cover of your book selection announcing, “This book was donated in your child’s honor!” Recognitions of book donations are presented every Friday at 7:45 am. Book Club Forms can be picked up in the office. Donating a book to the Bergeson Library is a wonderful tribute for your child that all Bergeson students can enjoy for many years. What a wonderful gift to give to grow our library. Thank you to the family of Evan Buchs for donating a book in honor of his birthday!
