No New Taxes – Chamber Recommends No on Prop 25

Date:

South Orange County Chamber Recommends that Region Businesses Strongly Oppose Proposition 25

Laguna Hills, CA….The South Orange County Regional Chamber of Commerce announced today it strongly opposes Proposition 25, a measure that would eliminate the supermajority required to pass the budget and replace it with a simple majority.

The Regional Chamber joins hundreds of business groups and taxpayer advocates as well as Californians everywhere struggling to make ends meet in opposition to this ill-conceived measure.

“Proposition 25,” explained Regional Chamber Legislative Action Committee Chair Wendy Bucknum, “allows the California legislature to raise our taxes with a bare majority vote.”

The measure would also eliminate the constitutional right of voters to use the referendum process to repeal fees and other damaging laws before they take effect, such as Proposition 26, also on the November 2010 ballot.

“The goal of Proposition 25 supporters/Proposition 26 opponents is to make it easier for the Legislature’s majority to pass a state budget by simply raising taxes on California taxpayers,” concluded Bucknum of Professional Community Management. “I encourage the South Orange County business community to vote NO on Proposition 25 and YES on 26!”

While the South Orange County Regional Chamber of Commerce does not endorse candidates, it does endorse for or against local and statewide measures that members feel will impact the region’s businesses. The Governmental Affairs Committee voted on the recommendations of the Proposition Sub-committee then submitted the entire slate of positions for approval by the Chamber’s Corporate Board of Directors. The Regional Chamber will announce positions on all statewide propositions throughout the month of September.

A leading advocate for business in south Orange County, the South Orange County Regional Chamber of Commerce provides services for more than 600 member businesses of all sizes and industries throughout the region.
