Dr. Joseph M. Farley will hold 18 community and staff meetings over the next five months to ensure the focus remains on what’s important—classroom instruction. Students, parents and community members are invited to attend the “Back to the Classroom” tour beginning on Thursday, Oct. 14 at Capistrano Valley High School.

State Budget Suspends Proposition 98 Funding
Early Friday morning, the state legislature passed a budget that is 100 days past due. Part of the budget deal involved suspending Proposition 98, which mandates 40 percent of state revenue be allocated to public education. More specific details about school budgets will be forthcoming.

Parent Greeters Take Stand to Protect Students
Parents at 10 Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) schools have teamed up with the Orange County District Attorney (OCDA) and local police to form a new Gang Reduction and Intervention Program (GRIP) parent greeter program designed to counter the lure of gangs. GRIP is a law enforcement partnership that identifies at-risk youth and aims to increase school attendance and decrease gang activity. The new parent greeter program empowers parents to take responsibility for their schools and communities by proactively taking a stand against gang crime.

Fundraisers Bring Food, Fun to Local Communities
Capistrano Valley and Aliso Niguel High Schools will benefit from fundraisers that feature food from local restaurants. The first Taste of Capo is Thursday, Oct. 21 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the school’s mall. At the event, about 20 local restaurants will provide sampling plates to ticket holders. Attendees can also win a variety of prizes, including lunch with Mission Viejo Mayor Patricia Kelley. Information on Taste of Capo can be found here. Taste of Aliso Niguel celebrates its fourth year on Saturday, Oct. 23 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 101 Enterprise in Aliso Viejo. This adult-only event (must be 21 to attend) features food samples from great local restaurants, incredible wine tasting and beer. Attendees will enjoy the sounds of accomplished local musicians.
