Aliso Viejo’s top citizens feted for contributions Wednesday

Date:

Mayor Phil Tsunoda on Wednesday honored Aliso Viejo’s 2010 Citizens, Youth and Senior of the Year during his spectacular “Aliso is Wonderland” State of the City address among a full house at the Aliso Viejo Conference Center.

During the well-received, dazzling presentation, Raymond and Vivian De Leon were named Aliso Viejo’s Citizens of the Year; Judy Shandrew was honored as Senior of the Year; and collectively AYSO, Little League and Girls Softball were feted as this city’s Youth of the Year.

Ask anyone who knows Ray and Vivian for three words to describe them and you’ll likely hear – compassion, dedication and volunteerism. It is those characteristics that led to the selection of these two outstanding individuals as Aliso Viejo’s Citizens of the Year. There aren’t many city or Aliso Viejo Community Association (AVCA) events or programs that you won’t find Ray and Vivian giving their time and hearts to.

Judy is just one of those selfless individuals who believes in the old adage of “it’s better to give than receive.” An avid volunteer and friendly soul, Judy has devoted many hours of her time volunteering at special City events such as Snow Fest, Community Cup Golf Tournaments and Tax Filing Workshops, among others.

American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) Region 889, Aliso Viejo Little League and Aliso Viejo Girls Softball create positive environments designed to instill camaraderie, spirit and good sportsmanship in our youth. These three leagues are fueled by dedicated volunteers – parents, managers, coaches, team moms and others – who give of their time and talents to make a difference in the lives of Aliso Viejo’s youth.

This is the fourth year the city has honored its top citizens. The City Council in 2006 adopted a policy for the program, which was created to recognize individuals in the community who have shown outstanding commitment to quality of life in Aliso Viejo.
