Boy Scout Uniforms were “in” at Oakley on Saturday, November 6th for the Eagle Court of Honor for eleven young men from Trabuco Canyon and Dove Canyon. Oakley typically does not open their facility to outside events, but housed this event as a favor to an employee. All the scouts honored as Eagle Scouts were from troop 752, sponsored by the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (The Mormon Church).
According to the National Eagle Scout Association, only 5% of all boy scouts ever become an Eagle Scout. Tyler Douglas, Assistant Crew Advisor said, “These young men represent the very best Scouting has to offer. They are prepared now to be moral leaders in our community and show all who they interact with what it means to be an Eagle Scout.”
Mormon Bishop, Larry Gregson, presented the Eagle Charge followed by the pinning ceremony for each new Eagle Scout. Peter Vidmar, a local Mormon known for his 1984 Olympic Gold Medal in Gymnastics, encouraged the boys to follow the scout oath and to be grateful. He ended his speech with this experience. “As I stood on the victory stand with my teammates when we received our gold medal, my overwhelming emotion was of gratitude. I was grateful to all who helped me to accomplish this goal. You eagle scouts will go on to accomplish great things. You will always go farther if you show gratitude to all who help you.”
Then at the conclusion of the evening, a beautiful video program presented all the projects, highlighting each scout’s contribution to his community. Painting fences, planting trees, installing Astroturf, stenciling chairs, and repairing school sports equipment were included. Collecting food and school supplies for Laura’s house and collecting uniforms and sports equipment for third-world countries were some of the many projects among this ambitious group. After the final comments, the 350 persons in attendance enjoyed refreshments which included the favorite dessert of each of the eleven Eagle Scouts.
