December 2010
SEAWORLD AT DECEMBER NIGHTS: The two-day December Nights event is sure to bring some holiday cheer Dec. 3 and 4 at Balboa Park. During December Nights guests can visit SeaWorld’s holiday booth located outside the Prado restaurant in the Plaza de Panama. Visitors can meet and greet special SeaWorld animal ambassadors, enjoy unique photo opportunities and learn more about the park’s Year Full of Fun seasonal events, including SeaWorld’s Holiday Celebration. The booth will also include a giant inflatable killer whale and costume character visits.
SHOP WITH A COP: More than 300 under-served children will enjoy breakfast and a private sea lion and otter show at SeaWorld before embarking on a $100 holiday shopping spree at Target. It’s all part of this year’s Shop With a Cop, sponsored by local law enforcement agencies, SeaWorld, STAR/PAL and Target, Saturday, Dec. 4. After enjoying the breakfast and “Sea Lions LIVE” show, the children will ride with their assigned police officers in patrol cars, with lights flashing and sirens blaring, from the SeaWorld parking lot to Target where they “shop with a cop” for holiday gifts for themselves and family members. In its 16th year, Shop With a Cop provides not only holiday gifts for less fortunate families, but also a positive interaction with local law enforcement officers. SeaWorld has participated in Shop With a Cop for 13 years.
DAY WITHOUT A BAG: On Dec. 16 SeaWorld will be participating a “Day Without a Bag,” a county wide initiative challenging retailers in San Diego to forego plastic and paper single use bags for the day. SeaWorld will provide reusable tote bags with merchandise items purchased in the park (while supplies last). Plastic bags get into the oceans and have a negative impact on ocean wildlife. The region-wide day of education and grassroots action will come just in time for the holiday shopping season. The program has already been a success in the cities of Chula Vista, Oceanside, Encinitas and Solana Beach for the past two years.
SEAWORLD CELEBRATES THE HOLIDAYS PARADE STYLE: SeaWorld and the Shamu costume character will float by in the 38th Mission Bay Christmas Boat Parade of Lights, Saturday, Dec. 18. Shamu will spread some holiday cheer along with more than 100 festively decorated boats with holiday tunes resounding from their decks during the parade of lights. The parade excitement continues with the Big Bay Balloon Parade in the Port of San Diego on Dec. 30 and will showcase a 40-foot tall, 1,500-cubic-foot helium balloon shaped like a killer whale.
POINSETTIA BOWL AND HOLIDAY BOWL TEAM DAYS: Teams participating in San Diego’s Poinsettia Bowl and Holiday Bowl will get in a festive mood before their college football bowl games at Qualcomm Stadium by spending Team Days at SeaWorld. Players, coaches and staff from one of the Poinsettia Bowl-bound teams will visit SeaWorld on Dec. 20, while both Holiday Bowl teams will enjoy a day of fun animal adventures at the park on Dec. 27.
