As the excitement builds for its first international tour to Bulgaria, Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra (PSYO), led by Pacific Symphony Assistant Conductor Maxim Eshkenazy, performs “Porgy and Bess,” with well-known American favorites and a choral work demanding versatility and the highest quality from the young musicians.
Stemming from the success of last year’s inaugural collaboration, Pacific Chorale Honor Choir (PCHC) joins PSYO on Sunday, Feb. 27, at 4 p.m., in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, to perform “Five Mystical Songs” by Vaughan Williams, conducted by Pacific Chorale’s Assistant Conductor Robert Istad, with professionally acclaimed baritone James Martin Schaefer. Then, 16-year-old Ray Cheng, winner of the Symphony’s 2010 Concerto Competition and the orchestra’s co-concertmaster, displays his artistry in a riveting performance of the jazz-inspired favorite, Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.”
Finally, Eshkenazy leads an orchestral arrangement (Bennett) of another Gershwin favorite—the American folk opera “Porgy and Bess”—to be performed during PSYO’s tour to Bulgaria this summer.
Tickets are $18 general admission, $30 box seats. For more information or to purchase tickets call 714-755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org.
