PACIFIC SYMPHONY YOUTH WIND ENSEMBLE PERFORMS SECOND CONCERT OF THE SEASON – March 20th

Date:

PACIFIC SYMPHONY YOUTH WIND ENSEMBLE PERFORMS SECOND CONCERT OF THE SEASON, “WE THE PEOPLE—FOLK MUSIC FROM AROUND THE WORLD,” LED BY MUSIC DIRECTOR JOSHUA ROACH

Who: Pacific Symphony Youth Wind Ensemble (PSYWE), led by Joshua Roach under the direction of Pacific Symphony Music Director Carl St.Clair, and program advisor, H. Robert Reynolds.

What: Folk music at its best—performed by the amazing talent of PSYWE. The concert begins with Chance’s “Variations on a Korean Folk Song,” based on “Arirang,” the country’s unofficial national anthem. Then, a suite of dances includes the ornamental piano of “Ritual Fire Dance” from De Falla’s Spanish ballet, Mompou’s “Cancion y Danza No. 5,” and Khachaturian’s Armenian war song, “Sabre Dance.” For the finale, the ensemble heads back to grassroots America with Ticheli’s “Amazing Grace” and “Blue Shades.” Tickets are $18 general admission, $30 box circle. For more information, call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org.

When: Sunday, March 20, 2011, at 4 p.m.

Where: Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, Segerstrom Center for the Arts

Why: Currently in its fourth season, PSYWE has quickly gained recognition for being at the forefront of wind ensemble development in the country. Students work closely with musicians from Pacific Symphony, providing an opportunity for hard-working and high-quality young wind and percussion instrumentalists between the ages of 12 and 21 to enhance their musicianship
