Corpus Christi Catholic-Christian Community presents
The Twelfth Annual South Orange County Good Friday Prayer Breakfast April 22, 2011 $55 per person
‘Unless the grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies…’
Guest Speaker: Most Reverend Gordon D. Bennett, S.J, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Mandeville, Jamaica
A reference to our painful encounters with the Cross of Jesus, this year’s theme: ‘Unless the grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies…’, speaks to how we reap our deepest, if not at times conflicted, encounters with the grace of Jesus through the shedding of our external impediments. The morning will feature The Most Reverend Gordon D. Bennett, S.J., Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Mandeville, Jamaica. A successful and happy school administrator, ‘Father’ Bennett’s elevation to Bishop thrust him into the cauldron of ecclesiastical politics and racial sensitivities within the Catholic Church. Following his assignment to the impoverished Diocese of Mandeville, Jamaica, he suffered a stroke, and within his recovery came to the painful awareness and appreciation of the cross of Jesus being present within the very things we love, in his case, the inner workings of the Church itself. Bishop’s Bennett’s words and reflections on Good Friday morning will speak to many who likewise experience the painful cross of Jesus within their own entwined lives. Bishop Bennett will guide us to perceive the grace of God within the painful circumstances that are part and parcel of the very things that frequently define our individual lives.
Invitations and Reservation forms to be mailed NEXT WEEK!
The Corpus Christi College Scholarship (CCCS) is a merit based financial aid grant awarded to an individual student for the purpose of furthering her/his education. The Scholarship is awarded annually based on a range of criteria that reflect the values of our Corpus Christi Catholic-Christian Community as well as the abilities and potential of the student applicant. When should application be made? The application, sealed recommendation letters, sealed transcripts and other supporting materials must be received by the Corpus Christi College Scholarship Committee (CCCSC) on or before March 15 at 4:00 PM Pacific Time. Transcripts can come directly from the applicant’s school if it is the policy of that institution not to give official documents to students. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all documents arrive before the March 15 deadline. Applications are available on the Concierge Shelves (and have been since November 2010.)

Making sure that all our endeavors are high quality and consistent with our F.I.S.H (Faith Initiative Starts at Home) principles, everything from Little Lambs and Good Shepherd to Christi Kids/Clubhouse and potential summer programs are being reviewed and scrutinized. Thanks for your understanding and patience as we tweak our essential Faith services.

Corpus Christi Diner’s Night at Flamingos Mexican Grill & Bar
25342 Mc Intyre Rd., Laguna Hills Thursday, April 7th, 2011 5 to 8:30pm
THIS WEDNESDAY….March 9th – ASH WEDNESDAY SCHEDULE
A particularly Catholic-Christian ritual, the placing of ashes on our foreheads in the rough shape of a cross, is scripturally inspired. It is meant to call to mind the references to Old Testament repentances of putting on ‘sackcloth and ashes’ as a way of externalizing our internal disposition. Our Simple Ash Services will commence at 4:00 a.m. for those who commute and need to get on the road. This will be followed by Services at 5:00 a.m., 6:00 a.m., 7:00 a.m. and a Mass at 8:00 a.m. and then a final Simple Ash Service at 10:00 a.m. If anyone needs to receive ashes prior to 4:00 a.m. ….simply call Fr. Fred (389-9011) on Tuesday morning (March 8th) to arrange a meeting at the Church anytime after Midnight.
Lent is more than just giving something up….
Like digging out the tried and true Christmas decorations each year, the season of Lent frequently finds people digging out the notions, devotions and disciplines of their childhood, no matter how tattered or worn they may be. As mentioned last week, Lent is an awesome opportunity for us to freshly consider, at length, the depth and intensity of our relationship with the person of Jesus. Certainly Scripture encourages prayer, abstinence and fasting (as we are asked to do on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and the Friday’s of Lent) but all too often Lent is equated with ‘giving something up’ such as wine, chocolate (bacon?) or whatever. While this endeavor might induce one to seriously consider our relationship with Jesus, it frequently can simply become a test of our stamina and discipline of mind over desire….and is usually equated with pretty inconsequential things. Perhaps instead, someone SERIOUS about giving something up might consider giving up arriving late for Mass? Such an effort would remind us of the priority and respect we afford Jesus and the Community within the Mass…or is Jesus supposed to just be happy with whatever we give him? Perhaps a FAST from our electronic devices….if only to become aware of how dependent we are upon them? How about the dedication of a weekly ‘Family Night’ when everyone stays home, eats dinner together and then wrestles with being family…together? Perhaps a FAST from alcohol AND sending the corresponding savings to the Family Support Center at our Sister-Parish, St. Polycarp in Stanton? Knowing the value of time and personal agendas, perhaps a FAST of personal convenience with a weekly (or bi-weekly) dedication of time and service to The Catholic Worker food prep in Santa Ana? In other words, rather than ‘giving something up’, how about ‘taking something on’ that would benefit others and might be life changing? The devotions and mechanisms of Lent are intended to rattle our cages, those confining habits and rituals with which we have become overly comfortable and dependent. Lent is an opportunity to consider from where we seek our truest satisfactions and fulfillment. Is it Jesus…or have we slipped into just giving him lip service but we really do not mean what we say?

Our March HAVEN meeting is upon us! Join us on March 12th for our HAVEN meeting, “Clearing the Noise for Lent”. As we learn more about Lent, we will consider what “noise” we might need to clear out of our lives to make room for God and prepare for the renewal of our Baptismal promises at Easter. As always, our meeting begins with the 5:00 pm mass, continues with dinner, music, and exploration of our evening’s theme, ending at 10:00 pm. The last hour of the evening includes reflection stations and you will have the opportunity to choose from stations surrounding: music, deeper discussion, reading, prayer, and a special Lenten art project “Outside the Box” facilitated by Laurie Barber. Please contact Linda Palomino palomino6@cox.net or 949-290-3424 with any questions.
Have you made your 2011 PSA pledge yet? Come on…be a proud part of our family…every pledge helps!
Starting next week we will be sending out letters of inquiry to the 1000 supposedly-Registered parishioners who have yet to make a pledge to this years pastoral Services Appeal. Corpus Christi’s rock-solid strength has always been the involvement by ALL the members of our parish family….not just a percentage of them. Even modest monthly pledges add up to significant amounts…and modest pledges multiplied by 100’s and 100’s make for a substantial Building Fund amount. PLEASE…if you have not yet pledged…please do so promptly. Thanks!!
