The Angeles for the Arts organization at Saddleback College presented scholarship awards in the amount of $1000 each to students in the Arts at Saddleback College at the Cinema-Television-Radio studios on May 10yh. The seven recipients, their parents and friends joined the Angels Board and Performing Arts staff for dessert and coffee for this intimate ceremony. Angels Board members introduced each of the award-winners and the students performed, presented or discussed their particular medium.
Tod Burnett, Saddleback College President, stated “Thank you to the Angels for the Arts for their continuous and dedicated support to our students and performing and visual arts programs, and congratulations to our student scholarship winners, whose talents are an inspiration throughout our campus and community.”
“It was an honor to be a part of the Angels for the Arts Scholarship Ceremony, and I was extremely proud of the achievements of our seven recipients. It is also a pleasure to have support from the Angles and I truly believe their advocacy for the arts will inspire these students for many years,” says Bart McHenry, Dean of Fine Arts and Media Technology.
Kate Realista, Director of Performing Arts/Operations, stated, “This is the most inspirational evening of the year for the Angels. It is always moving to watch as a community member hands the scholarship to one of Saddleback’s young artists.”
Congratulations to our recipients:
Andrew Olsen, Cinema-Television-Radio student from Mission Viejo, received his award from Angels Board member Cee Cee Wakefield. Andrew presented a DVD he produced, which featured his daily “grind” as a student in the Cinema-Television-Radio department. Andrew is honored to have been chosen as the recipient representing the CTVR department and plans to purchase needed equipment for his endeavors with the scholarship money. Charlie Myers, Andrew’s film production teacher, was there to see Andrew receive his award, and he spoke highly of Andrew’s commitment to his studies.
Edmur Cigarroa, Dance student from Laguna Niguel, was introduced by Board Member Marji Himes, who is also a Saddleback College dance instructor. She showed a video of a dance sequence that Edmur was in during the Dance Department’s recent Dance Collective 2011, in which he displayed his expertise in a jazz version of a stag leap. According to Edmur, the scholarship money will help him with his financial obligations while he is dedicating as much time as possible to dance.
Tyler McGeough, Music student from Aliso Viejo, received his award from honorary Angels Board member and Dean of Fine Arts and Media Technology Bart McHenry, who told the audience that Tyler is taking four music classes this semester while carrying an overall GPA of 3.73. Tyler is appreciative of the money and plans to use it to help him pay for expenses at Cal State Long Beach as he was just accepted into the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music there in the fall. Tyler entertained the audience with his expertise in playing the trombone.
Melisa Seyhun, Speech student from Aliso Viejo, received her scholarship check from Angels Board member Amber Caras. Melisa credits speech instructor Heidi Ochoa with inspiring her and she wants to continue with speech at a four-year University. Ochoa was in the audience to see Melisa receive her award. Melisa carries a 4.0 GPA while participating on the speech team. To the audience’s delight, Melisa gave a poetry interpretation performance.
Diana Campos, Theatre Arts student from Lake Forest, received her award from Angels Board member Ken Realista, who stated that Diana is a well-rounded theatre student in that she not only performs on stage as she did in a recent production of The Journey, but she also is behind the scenes in painting sets for college productions and creating puppets for outreach performances. Diana displayed work she had done in her scene painting class plus she brought out a treasured puppet head from her purse that she had made in puppet class.
Patty Lin-Nozawa, Visual Arts student, from San Juan Capistrano, received her award from Angels Board member Judy Morton, who relates to Patty’s interest in visual arts as she took similar art classes in the Art Department at Saddleback over 30 years ago. Patty carries a 4.0 GPA and her full-load includes beginning piano, vocal performance, photography, art history, life model drawing, cardiovascular conditioning and conversational French. Two of Patty’s drawings were displayed and she described the process.
Shante Gillette, Photography student from Mission Viejo, was introduced by Board member Barbara Kroe, who stated she just met Shante this evening and she is impressed with her talent and dedication as she takes the bus to school. Shante described various photographic techniques on photos that were displayed. Her long-term goal in photography is to be a successful, established photographer. Not only is Shante in the process of continuing her education but she is also starting her own photography business.
The Angels for the Arts is a fundraising and support organization for the Performing and Visual Arts at Saddleback College. Angel members donate their time and talent to raise funds and assist with a variety of arts events on the campus. The group is led by a volunteer advisory board of directors. Angel members believe in the importance of offering a full spectrum of arts to the community, with the college as the focal point. These events bring together Orange County residents from all walks of life, for the purpose of enlightenment, entertainment, and inspiration.
Angels for the Arts provide support for scholarships for students in Visual & Performing Arts, MainStage Kids Productions, master classes with professional artists, hospitality for guest artist performers and crew, enhancements for arts patrons, such as the tram, and the annual Big Band Swing Thing fundraiser.
