The Ocean Institute is pleased to present a Billabong TransparentSea Voyage Party on Sunday, October 16, 5 p.m. The party will welcome a group of environmental advocates led by professional Australian surfer Dave Rastovich and feature a screening of the movie Minds in the Water, a live concert by Band of Frequencies, and an art show and auction in support of Surfers for Cetaceans (S4C) and other ocean-minded charities. The event is open to the public; tickets are $15 pre-sale or $20 at the door. Rastovich and his fellow environmentalists are in the midst of a one-month, 260-mile voyage from Gaviota Coast (north of Santa Barbara) to the U.S.-Mexico border, part of TransparentSea (www.transparentseavoyage.com), an initiative which highlights coastal issues and the plight of marine mammals. The entourage is traveling by 18-foot Hobie kayaks, and is making 20 stops along the way to raise awareness of environmental issues.
“We’re pleased to support Dave and the TransparentSea initiative in their efforts to keep our beaches and oceans clean and safeguard the well-being of our ocean’s inhabitants,” remarked Bentley Cavazzi, Vice President of Operations for the Ocean Institute. “The TransparentSea initiative is compatible with our own mission, ocean preservation through education.”
He also extended the Institute’s thanks to Billabong for their sponsorship of the party.
Rastovich will be joined along his route by like-minded individuals and special guests as he makes his way south. Others joining Rastovich include surfer and artist Chris Del Moro, musician Will Conner, surf photographer Hilton Dawe and surf champion Lauren Hill. This is the group’s second voyage; the first TransparentSea Voyage took place off Australia’s coast in 2009.
