Musical Theatre West is proud to announce its 60th Anniversary Season of shows
Long Beach, Calif. Paul Garman, Executive Director/Producer, and Steven Glaudini, Artistic Director/Producer, are proud to announce Musical Theatre West’s 2012-2013 season at the beautiful Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach – the company’s 60th Anniversary Season.
Recent world-class productions of MAN OF LA MANCHA, HAIRSPRAY and CATS have solidified MTW’s reputation as Southern California’s premier musical theater company. Critics agree that Musical Theatre West is “currently the Southland’s finest” musical theater company (Back Stage) and MTW “sets the bar for musical theatre in Southern California” (Gazette Newspapers).
“This special anniversary season offers something for everyone,” Steven Glaudini, MTW’s Artistic Director/Producer, stated. “We’re proud to provide a season that truly celebrates this great American art form. From the Tony-Award winning musicals 42nd STREET, and OKLAHOMA!, to A CHORUS LINE and SUNSET BOULEVARD, we at MTW continue to provide the highest quality of Musical Theatre to our region, solidifying our claim that at 60 years old, we’re Southern California’s Premier Musical Theatre Company and we invite you to join us as we raise the curtain on our anniversary season!”
Come and meet those dancing feet, on the avenue I’m taking you to… 42nd STREET. The season will open with the Tony Award-winning song-and-dance fable of Broadway (October 26-November 11, 2012). Terrific tap dancing and sensational singing abound as Peggy Sawyer, fresh off the bus from Allentown, Pennsylvania, is plucked out of the chorus to save the show when leading lady Dorothy Brock breaks her ankle and cannot go on. This show features the classic songs “We’re in the Money,” “Shuffle Off to Buffalo,” “Lullaby of Broadway,” and the title song.
For its second production, MTW is proud to present the show that changed everything, OKLAHOMA! (February 15-March 3, 2013). OKLAHOMA!, celebrating its 70th Anniversary, spins this tale of two cowboys who flirt and fight for the women they love just before Oklahoma is officially entered into the Union. Unforgettable songs from this American classic include “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” “The Surrey with the Fringe in Top” and “People Will Say We’re in Love.”
MTW’s third production is one singular sensation. A CHORUS LINE (April 12-28, 2013). More than thirty five years ago, A CHORUS LINE set Broadway on fire with this glimpse into the hopes, dreams and lives of a group of dancers at an audition for a Broadway show. Their stories are exposed by the director in an effort to get to know the people “on the line.” Songs featured are “Dance: Ten, Looks: Three,” “Nothing,” “What I Did For Love” and “One.”
To close its 60th Anniversary Season, MTW is thrilled to present, for the first time in the Los Angeles area since its premiere, SUNSET BOULEVARD (July 12-28, 2013). Based on the classic Billy Wilder Film starring Gloria Swanson, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s score transports the audience into the world of film noir. The Carpenter Center stage will come alive with the story of faded silent film star, Norma Desmond, a recluse locked away in her California mansion until a brash young writer suddenly appears on her doorstep one evening. SUNSET BOULEVARD features the songs “With One Look,” “The Greatest Star of All” and “As If We Never Said Goodbye.”
Season subscriptions are on sale now and range in price from $80.00 – $260.00.
Single tickets go on sale September 12, 2012.
