54th Swallows Day Parade – Saturday, March 24
WHAT: 54th Swallows Day Parade and Mercado Street Fair!
WHEN: Saturday, March 24, 2012; Parade starts at 11:00 a.m. and Mercado Street Fair runs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (most surrounding streets are closed to traffic by 10:00 a.m.). *Parade and Mercado events take place rain or shine.
WHERE: The1.5 mile parade begins on El Camino Real at Ortega Highway and travels on Del Obispo Road to Camino Capistrano, then north back towards the Mission San Juan Capistrano. The Mercado Street Fair is held at the historic Town Center Park off of El Camino Real and Ortega Highway
PARKING: Shuttle service available at parking lots at Endevco and Fluidmaster lots (off Rancho Viejo Road or at the San Juan Capistrano Community Center and Sports Park (off Camino Del Avion near Del Obispo). Shuttle runs from 8:00 a.m. – 5:45 p.m. Shuttle costs is $2.00 round-trip for adults; children 12 and under are free.
HIGHLIGHTS: Two hundred parade entries, over 400 horses, eleven marching bands, and dozens of colorful entries that celebrate San Juan Capistrano’s Spanish, western and Juaneno Indian heritage
Mercado Street Faire features approximately 100 vendor booths with
crafts, clothing, games, a variety of food, beer and wine and live country western
music by Rick & the Working Cowboy Band
BACKGROUND: One of the largest non-motorized parades in the country, Swallows Day Parade activities pay tribute to the annual return of the swallows and San Juan Capistrano’s Spanish, Juaneno Indian and western heritage.
