Shorecliffs MS Garden Offers Outdoor Curriculum

Grand Opening Picnic Scheduled for Saturday

Shorecliffs Middle School students learn in the Westview Learning Garden.

Shorecliffs Middle School will hold a grand opening picnic for its West View Learning Garden on Saturday, March 24, from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. The garden was created by teachers and parent volunteers who wanted to create a way to connect students to educational standards and have the curriculum “come alive.” The garden committee secured more than $15,000 in grants and material donations from the community. The garden includes five raised beds for vegetables and herbs, a strawberry patch, a native area for butterflies, an area for succulents, and an outdoor classroom with a white board and seating for 35 students. The garden is a perfect fit for the 6th and 7th grade science curriculum. The outdoor labs allow students to learn about composting, soil composition, water runoff, photosynthesis, cellular respiration, genetics, and adaptations. While the sciences may be the most obvious tie to the garden, other subjects have already begun using it for instruction. Art students of all levels have experienced the meditative ambiance of the garden doing sketchbook drawings, murals, and painting of native plants for identification stakes. English classes have started journal writing and outdoor poetry to inspire young writers. The school’s cooking class uses the harvests of fruits, herbs, and vegetables to teach about nutrition and cooking. Plans are in the works for a history garden and perhaps a Civil War camp.

Opportunity to Find Best  Academic Fit for Students

Friday, March 30 is the last day of Open Enrollment, allowing students to apply to one of 30 different academic programs that meets their educational needs. Applications will be available online, at local schools, and at the District Education Center, 33122 Valle Road, San Juan Capistrano. The application period runs from Monday, March 19 to Friday, March 30. Completed applications must be turned in between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. either at the school to which the child is applying or at the Education Center. Since the program began 18 years ago, more than 90 percent of parents have chosen to have their child attend the school in their attendance area. The Open Enrollment process provides parents with the ability to apply to a school outside of their child’s attendance area on a space-available basis. This year, there are 30 schools with space to accept Open Enrollment students. Detailed information describing each school and its academic offerings is available online. In the event there are more Open Enrollment applications than openings at a particular school, students will be selected by lottery. Notifications will be sent to families beginning on April 30.-more-
