Dana Point, CALIF., April 2, 2012 – The Ocean Institute will host a public workshop presented by the California Coastal Commission on the success in 2011 of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) artificial reef project (Wheeler North Reef) on Monday, April 9, 6-8 p.m. The event is free to attend and open to the public.
In 1991, the California Coastal Commission ordered Edison, which operates SONGS, to mitigate the adverse effects of the nuclear power plant. In 1999, a successful test reef was built, followed by a larger reef which created a 176-acre kelp forest capable of sustaining vast amounts of sea life.
The workshop is part of a periodic public review of the project. The Coastal Commission invites government officials, scientists and members of the public interested in the issue to attend.
