Earth Day At The Ocean Institute – Special activities for the weekend of April 22

Celebrate Earth Day 2012 at the Ocean Institute

DANA POINT, Calif. – The Ocean Institute will join in the nationwide celebration of Earth Day on Sunday, April 22, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.  Special activities for the weekend include:

  • Learn about California native plants, xeriscaping and water conservation
  • Plant your own wild flower seeds in a decomposable pot to take home
  • Buy a native plant from Tree of Life Nursery to plant in the Ocean Institute’s native plant garden or take it home to start your own xeriscape
  • Listen to discussions about composting, drought resistance and natural rodent control
  • Make an eco-friendly craft by decorating your own reusable bag
  • Have your children listen to a story, enjoy a dissection and participate in hands-on marine mammal activities, including one demonstrating the effect of ocean acidification on sea creatures

Bring in your old athletic shoes to recycle.  The cost to participate is $6.50 for adults, $4.50 for children (ages 4-12); participate in the beach and harbor clean-up 9 – 11 a.m. that day and receive free admission that day.

 

Founded in 1977, the Ocean Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated to ocean preservation through education, setting the standard for educational excellence and serving as a leading resource for universities, museums, teachers and all others seeking to increase their knowledge of the ocean.  The Ocean Institute is open to the general public on weekends, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.  Cost:  $6.50 adults, $4.50 children (ages 4-12), Ocean Institute members free.  Unique maritime and ocean-themed items are available in the Chambers Gallery everyday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Institute address: 24200 Dana Point Harbor Dr., Dana Point.  Website: www.ocean-institute.org.  Phone number: (949) 496-2274.
