Students Entering 7th Grade Need Proof of Tdap Vaccination

State Law Mandates Whooping Cough Booster Shot

Students entering 7th grade need to show proof of a Tdap vaccination.

Students entering the 7th grade in the 2012-2013 school year will need proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster immunization for school in the fall. The new requirement, signed into law in 2010, comes after California experienced its worst outbreak of pertussis in more than 50 years, with more than 9,000 confirmed cases and 10 infant deaths. The new immunization requirement is intended to help reduce the spread of whooping cough among California’s youth. Most children are fully protected prior to entering kindergarten because of the DTaP vaccine, a vaccine made for younger children. However, protection to these diseases wears off and preteens and teens may be at risk for catching this dangerous disease without a booster. The Tdap requirement affects all incoming 7th grade students in California, so it’s important to avoid the back-to-school rush and to get our children vaccinated now. Tell other parents with children in the 6th grade about the requirement and encourage them to schedule the shot early, before summer. More information can be found on the Health Services webpage.

Summer Classes Offer Enrichment, Activities, Sports for Students

District’s Community Education Taking Applications

South Orange County children can take advantage of a full range of enrichment activities and athletic classes through the District’s community education program, also known as ACE. Among the diverse offerings are classes in computer game design, cooking, math, and video production. Group, private, and semi-private swim lessons are available at four high schools and sports camps for students of all ages will be offered. For more information, call (949) 234-9482 or visit the CUSD ACE website. Classes begin June 25, 2012. Returning this summer is the UC Irvine Writing Project, a three-week standards-based program that offers students an opportunity to develop their writing skills. An afternoon session that focuses on math and science is also available. Last summer the project attracted more than 300 children. Sessions will be held at Oso Grande and Laguna Niguel elementary schools. To register for the UCI Writing Project, call (949) 824-5922 or visit the project website.-more-

Parents Urged to Use New Portal

Save Time, Access Vital Student Information

Parent Portal is now available for parents of all current K-12 students. We strongly encourage you to register for a Parent Portal account before school offices close in June, so you will be able to take advantage of the new online re-registration system for the 2012-2013 school year. When the window opens in August, parents with portal accounts will have the ability to use this online system for re-registration, rather than completing the large, traditional paper packet. Parents will also have the ability to update student demographic and emergency contact information, view daily attendance reports, print report cards and transcripts, and download important documents directly from the portal. Letters were mailed home to parents of secondary students in February with specific information related to Parent Portal account creation. Parents of elementary students received their letters during fall parent conferences.  The information in the letter includes your student’s identification, home phone number, and a unique verification code which will be needed during the portal registration process.  Using the information from the letter, simply log on to  abi.capousd.org where you will find directions and a link for creating your Parent Portal account.  There is also a portal link on each school’s homepage. A HELP link is available at  abi.capousd.org if you have questions during the registration process.  If you have lost your letter, please contact your school office before the last day of classes.

Virtual Schools Accepting Students

Online Alternatives Exist from Kindergarten to High School

Students in the Capistrano Unified School District can now complete their entire K-12 career in a virtual setting thanks to two new online programs set to expand this fall. Capistrano Virtual School, serving K-8 students, and California Preparatory Academy, Orange County’s newest virtual public high school, were approved by the Board of Trustees in order to meet the needs of families and students who want alternatives to the traditional classroom setting. For more information about Capistrano Virtual School, visit the school website or call (949) 234-9374. For more information about California Preparatory Academy, contact Principal Rob Nye at rhnye@capousd.org or (949) 493-0659 ext. 207 or visit the school website.
