The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity
Deuteronomy 4:32-40 Romans 8:14-17 Matthew 28:16-20
A common occurrence following every sporting event is the ‘post-game’ conversation by the analysts, commentators, retired pros and desk-jockeys. Video clips are replayed, various occurrences within the previous game are analyzed, dissected and reviewed. While the game itself was no-doubt fun and fulfilling, the post-game experience is as much a part of the ritual and brings the game to a proper conclusion.
So it is with the just completed Easter Season (which ended with last week’s Pentecost experience), this weekend and next are given over to affirmation of ‘doctrinal days’: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity and then next weekend, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi). Essentially, before slipping into Ordinary Time, which will take us all the way to Thanksgiving, we affirm some central beliefs: that while God is mysterious, he has opened the door to pondering this mystery in the giving of his name, Father, Son and Holy Spirit….and that Jesus nourishes us with his very flesh and blood so that we may be drawn ever more deeply into this mystery.
These are ‘anchor’ understandings, things to which we may cling when life throws us upset and change. While life may be in turmoil around us, nor may we know what lies ahead, God has invited us to draw close to him and lose ourselves in a relationship with him…AND he feeds/nourishes us with his very flesh and blood so as to have the strength to face whatever the challenges may be. In one month, throughout the Diocese of Orange, communities and individual priests will be in turmoil. July 2nd is the ‘official’ day of transition as guys shift form one place to another, as communities suddenly must become accustomed to new faces and become very aware of the absence of familiar ones. While everything shifts beneath our feet, let us remember that our faith is not based on single individuals or even a community…rather, our stability and true identity lie within Father, Son and Holy Spirit…and while everything else shifts…that remains rock solid.
