Two Grads Named Merit Scholars
Scholarships Help Students Pursue Career Goals
The District can boast two additional students who have been named National Merit Scholars, it was announced this week. Alexandra Mardock, who graduated from Aliso Niguel High School, and Marisa Shimano, who graduated from Dana Hills High School, are two of more than 2,000 additional winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by colleges and universities. These Merit Scholar designees join more than 2,500 other college-sponsored award recipients who were announced in May and included Charles Hsin-Chi Leo, an Aliso Niguel High School graduate, and Valen Crain, a Capistrano Valley High School graduate. Mardock, who will attend Rice University in Texas, plans to pursue a career in medicine. Shimano will attend Northwestern University and pursue a career in writing. Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program who will attend their institution. College sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.
