PTA GIFT WRAP FUNDRAISER: This is one of our PTA’s largest fundraisers and is vital for the continuation of our enrichment programs. The catalogues are filled with unique gift wraps and household items. Many would make great gifts. Be sure to shop additional great gifts online for our annual gift wrap fundraiser. Beginning Monday, special online prize pens will be awarded in addition to the angry birds bracelet and collectable duckies. Remember to register your child so he/she will get credit for online orders from friends and family and earn some very exciting prizes! Have children bring in the coupon after selling their items because we have a drawing every morning. They can drop off their coupon in the office or out at the morning flag ceremony.

MONDAY is Columbus Day but it is NOT a student holiday.

PTA DIRECTORY COVER ART CONTEST: We are looking for great artwork for our annual PTA Directory cover. Submit your entries on 8 1/2 “ X 11” paper, include Bergeson PTA Directory 2012-2013, and a picture of “Bergie” the bulldog. You may buy a directory for $10. There is no charge to have your name listed. All entries and orders are due October 31st.

LOST AND FOUND: All lost and found items will be in a big basket in the corner of the MPR behind a blue curtain. There are lunch boxes and water bottles in there, too. If you’re missing something, please check there.

25TH ANNIVERSARY FESTIVAL ON NOVEMBER 2! Save the date so that you can join us for this memorable event from 5 – 8 PM with some special surprises in store for you. THE REAL Marian Bergeson will be in attendance, Bergeson alumni band, Crown Valley Parkway will be playing, some really special guests, games, rides, boutique booths, BBQ and much more. We are hoping that you can spread the word to ALL of the alumni who might be able to come by and celebrate with us, too. Please help us to spread the word. Mark your calendar so that you can plan to be with us!

WALK TO SCHOOL DAY: This was a record breaking day with 500 students walking to school (out of the 615 students). WOW! Thank you for helping to support your healthy kids! Thank you to the Walgreen’s Store for the waters/school supplies and thank you to the Laguna Niguel Police Department for escorting our families to school. We particularly thank Deputy James Van Patten who helped us to organize the escorts.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT was a smashing success with filled classrooms last night! It shows how much our Bergeson families care to have so many of you come to Back to School Night. We are partners in this educational journey that our children are on and we are truly happy and blessed to be partners with YOU!

THANK YOU TO TGI FRIDAY’S for providing a free lunch to Mrs. Loh’s class today. Mrs. Loh’s class won 1st place in the paper drive competition. We thank their manager, Beau and Assistant Manager, Ally for their generous donations to our Bergeson kids. Mrs. Bell’s class was in 2nd place and they have their TGI Friday’s free lunch at the beginning of November.

FOOTPRINT FRIDAY CHALLENGE – A SUCCESS! Bergeson School WINS over Palisades School! Mr. Scholl, principal at Palisades, wore the head of the Bulldog and the Bergeson red jersey to his flag ceremony this morning and grrrrowled! Most importantly, our school collected SO much recycling that we filled the large bin in one month! Every time we fill the bin, it’s $1000 to our school. Yippee! Today was the start of the October Challenge. The grade level who collects the most bottles and cans will get a free Chick fil A lunch for the whole grade level! You will also get a Bergeson Best each time you bring a bag of recyclables to school on Friday morning. One of the late bird parents will collect recyclable right before school at 9:10 AM, too. Here are the tallies for today:

Kindergarten: 19.92 pounds

First Grade: 27.03 pounds

Second Grade: 38.69 pounds

Third Grade: 20.19 pounds

Fourth Grade: 42.64 pounds

Fifth Grade: 9.23 pounds

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR: Thank you for buying books, helping your children to enjoy reading and for supporting our school. A big thank you to Cheryl Deacon and Janice Ruckmick for their organization of the book fair this week.

SNEAKER COLLECTION: Our Bergeson Student Council will hold a shoe drive October 1 through 12 on our campus. Only rubber soled shoes are collected. These rubber soled shoes may be old or torn, as long as they are still repairable. You will need to keep the pairs of sneakers together by either tying the shoelaces together or by zip-tying the shoes (if the shoes do not have laces). Each pound of rubber soled sneakers donated will raise 50 cents, so a pair of shoes may raise $1! At another local school, they were able to raise $600 alone. Our school will receive a check for all the money raised for the shoes after about 8-14 weeks. The Green Sneakers organization will also collect your rubber soled sneakers and restore them so they can be sent to third world countries, where they will be reused. There will be a large plastic bin in the office where you can donate the shoes.

4th and 5TH GRADE MUSIC CLASSES: Beginning the week of October 8, 5th graders will be choosing their music class for this school year. A letter will come home with brief explanations of each class. Please discuss these choices and make this decision based on what is best for your individual child and your family. Returning the bottom portion of that letter insures good communication with the music teachers. Thank you from the music teachers, Lisa Gray (strings/orchestra), Doug Jones (5th band, 4th strings), Robin Hervey (choral/general music), Quin Thornburg (choral/general music). Our Bergeson Foundation has put together a fundraiser for music instrument rentals. If you rent your instrument through the SMART Foundation in Laguna Niguel or OC Music (near Wendy’s), our school will receive a percentage of the rent back to our school. For more information, click HERE for the 4th or 5th grade flyer. The 4th Grade Music Demonstration will be in the MPR and parents are invited to attend:

10/24 at 8:35 for Terheggen and Duff’s students 1 – 16

10/26 at 1:25 for Thomas and Duff’s students 17 – 33

5TH GRADERS leave for science camp on Tuesday! They return on Friday. On the way out on Tuesday, we will communicate with 5th grade families to let you know when the campers arrive at camp. In addition, we’ll communicate with you to let you know when they are on their way back from camp on Friday. For those of you who are sending medications there will be detailed instructions on what to do. And for your campers, there will be a detailed list of what to pack and information regarding Tuesday morning. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate in contacting Joanne Buchs at jmb33@cox.net or 949-364-5487. For the students who are not attending camp, we have a substitute teacher who will be teaching these 5th graders. 5th graders are expected to be at school if they are not attending camp. If you are planning to have your 5th grader out of school, make sure to communicate with Angel Newell on Monday morning regarding an Independent Study.
