Kaleidoscope Business Owner, Mom & Breast Cancer Survivor Inspires this year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month Community Campaign at the Center
MISSION VIEJO, CA – The non-profit From Chrysalis to Wings has touched the life of Kaleidoscope’s Jump ‘n Jammin owner Nancy Barnes since her breast cancer diagnosis at age 32. It is Nancy’s inspirational journey in the last 13 years that has inspired Kaleidoscope to select the organization for the October 2012 Breast Cancer Awareness Month in hopes it will also help others undergoing similar experiences.
Barnes’ story also touched From Chrysalis to Wings founder and sister-in-law Francine Zorehkey, who later created A.W.O.L (A Way of Life… after diagnosis) for breast cancer survivors, in large part due to Barnes’ experience. “I went to the first retreat in 2003 and had the most incredible experience. I met other women, like me, who had had breast cancer. There were all ages, from 28 to 84 years of age. It was so incredible to not only be pampered, but to actually speak with others who knew what I had been through, because they had been through the same thing. I now go every year, not as a guest, but as a volunteer,” said Nancy Barnes, Jump ‘n Jammin owner. All the money raised for A.W.O.L goes to survivors and it relies on volunteers.
“Bringing community awareness for breast cancer and more specifically, From Chrysalis to Wings’ A.W.O.L retreat, is important to Kaleidoscope because it really touches on a part of the breast cancer journey most people don’t think about,” said Lauran Roberson, Marketing Director for Kaleidoscope. “It provides counseling and support, as well as a pampering experience for cancer survivors.”
Throughout October, Kaleidoscope businesses are selling pink ribbons for donation and placing on store windows. Jump ‘n Jammin is offering $2 off general admission when $1 is donated to women battling breast cancer. This month’s awareness campaign comes on the heels of Kaleidoscope’s Make-A-Wish, American Cancer Society Relay For Life, and the teenage drug overdose film preview Overtaken.
