25TH ANNIVERSARY FESTIVAL IS THIS FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2! The order forms went home this week so that you don’t have to stand in line and will get your advanced sale tickets for the greatest event in Laguna Niguel this Friday from 5 – 8 PM. THE REAL Marian Bergeson will be in attendance, Bergeson alumni band, Crown Valley Parkway will be playing, some really special guests, games, rides, boutique booths, BBQ, laser tag, hamster ball, game truck, cake walk and more. We are hoping that you can spread the word to ALL of the alumni who might be able to come by and celebrate with us, too. Please help us to spread the word.

If you would like to set up a vendor booth contact Courtney Fielder at cfielder1@att.net. All classes have been assigned a booth to run so please help by volunteering for a small portion of time to help our Festival run smoothly. If you would like to donate a cake for the cake walk, please bring your cake on Friday to the office. We will also dig up the 25 year old time capsule which was buried in the ground by our flag pole. Marian Bergeson will speak to the crowd at 6 PM. We will also be joined by our School Board President, Gary Pritchard and then we’ll dig up the time capsule at 6:30 PM as the party continues. Tell all of your friends and neighbors to come on down! Again, get your wristbands, tickets and meal tickets early so that you’re all ready for the Festival! The Order Form can also be found on the Bergeson website.

HALLOWEEN IS ON WEDNESDAY and we will dress up in as much ORANGE AND BLACK as we can possibly find in our closets. No costumes, please.

FOOTPRINT FRIDAY CHALLENGE: The October Grade Level Challenge has been a wonderful success! The 2nd graders have earned their free Chick fil A lunch for the whole grade level! Here are the tallies for the month below. BERGESON FOUNDATION – THE 180 CLUB: Join the Bergeson Elementary School Foundation. The Foundation pays for so much. Teacher’s Aides, K-3 Music, computers and much more. It is not too late to join. Can you afford $1 per day for each day that your child is in school so that we can have lots of extra programs at school? Join the 180 Club! You can join the 180 club, a family membership for $40, an individual member for $25 or ANY amount you want to donate. The first class to reach 100% will earn a FREE lunch walking field trip at TGI Fridays for the whole class. Every other class to reach 100% will enjoy an otter pop party. (members that join the 180 Club or Family membership will receive credit for all of their children’s classrooms.) We have raised $20,000 with great thanks to families who have participated. Our yearly budget is approximately $60,000 to pay for all of the programs that we have so please consider giving your child a gift which goes directly to your favorite school….Bergeson!

RED RIBBON WEEK was fabulously fun! We had an amazing number of students who dressed up to show their support of a healthy lifestyle! Mrs. Terheggen’s class is the winner of the most participation for the week and they will receive a little something special on Monday. Thank you to the girl scouts and boy scouts for decorating (and cleaning up) for Red Ribbon Week! Our school looked fabulous! We’ll have some great pictures uploaded to the Bergeson website with thanks to our resident photographer, Ed Arpawong.

PTA DIRECTORY COVER ART CONTEST: We are looking for great artwork for our annual PTA Directory cover. Submit your entries on 8 1/2 “ X 11” paper, include Bergeson PTA Directory 2012-2013, and a picture of “Bergie” the bulldog. You may buy a directory for $10. There is no charge to have your name listed. All entries and orders are due October 31st.

4th and 5TH GRADE MUSIC CLASSES are up and running! Students have two 40 minute music lessons per week. 4th Graders are making a choice between the beginning strings class and the general music class. Please turn in your form back to school next week with your choice. 5th Graders have made the choice of Band, Orchestra or Choir. Our Bergeson Foundation is running a fabulous fundraiser with Tim’s OC Music (behind Wendy’s on Crown Valley and Moulton) and SMART Foundation (on Merit Circle off of Cabot Rd.). Both of these organizations give a percentage of the sale back to the school and they have some of the lowest prices in town.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES: Bergeson Elementary will be holding Parent/Teacher Conferences NEXT WEEK, November 5 – 9. Students will be released on a modified schedule; all days (M, T, W, Th, and F) will be minimum days; no pupil free days this year.

DESTINATION IMAGINATION: We are looking to start a Destination Imagination Team at Bergeson for students in 3rd – 5th Grade. We can also have a Rising Stars Team for children in Kindergarten through 2nd grade. This program is coached by parents. If you are interested in being a DI coach with your child on the team, please contact Cindy Matsuura at CMatsuura@ocde.us. The Destination Imagination program encourages teams of learners to have fun, take risks, focus, and frame challenges while incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the arts, and service learning. Our participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process. Teams may showcase their solutions at a tournament.

BUY-BACK YOUR HALLOWEEN CANDY: Dr. Sayed is offering your students and school an opportunity to raise funds with our Halloween Candy buy Back program. When a student and parent bring their Halloween candy to our office, we will give them a $5.00 and match the $5.00 as a donation to your school.

IN LINE ~ ON TIME: If the class is In Line ~ On Time at the beginning of our day when the bell rings at 7:45 AM, the class receives a letter. Our goal is to spell out PERFECT ATTENDANCE. When we spell it out with those 17 days where all students are In Line ~ On Time, the whole class gets a popsicle party.

Congratulations to Mrs. Terheggen’s 4th graders for spelling out PERFECT ATTENDANCE and getting their popsicle party this week!

RALPH’S SUPERMARKET: Last year, our school raised $8000 through the Ralph’s Supermarket give-back program. Use your Ralph’s card or enter your telephone number at any Ralph’s store and you receive discounts. Sign up our school as a recipient and Ralph’s will donate a percentage of your purchase to our school. Each year, on September 1, we need to sign up AGAIN otherwise we stop receiving those donations. Please go to www.ralphs.com, sign in, go into “My Account” then click on “Community Rewards” and sign up Bergeson school to be the recipient OR print out the bar code sheet and have the checker scan it next time you go through the Ralph’s check out and our school receives the benefits all year long. It’s free money! For the scan sheet, click HERE.

MANDARIN CHINESE IMMERSION NEWS: If you are interested in fundraising efforts and social events, you can find information on this website: www.friendsofmip.com.

A LITTLE DYNASTY: A couple spaces have opened up for the Afterschool Bussing Program at A Little Dynasty Chinese School (ALD) due to some schedule changes with existing families. We are very fortunate ALD is able to pick up children from Bergeson to attend this program. The Afterschool Program is a 3 hour curriculum that will reinforce your child’s learning of Mandarin Chinese with both academic and enrichment activities and provide homework support – all in a small class Chinese immersion environment. Since the critical window for children to learn a second language accent free and have “multiple” first languages is between the ages of 4 and 7, the additional time for children in a Chinese Immersion environment will significantly maximize your child’s learning during this period. ALD’s bus will pickup based on the school’s end times (including modified days) on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tuition is $330 per month for Early Birds and $320 for Late Birds/1st Graders (after EFT discount) for the 2 day program. Alternatively if you are interested in just one day, the tuition is $220 per month. Limited spots are currently available so if you are interested, please contact Marisa Hanke at marisa@alittledynasty.com or at 949-212-5992.
