FREE TUTORING AT BERGESON: On Monday afternoons from 3:30 – 4:30 PM, we will have free tutoring offered in the Bergeson library. This program is offered by Aliso Niguel High School students in an on-campus club called Kid-2-Kid. The tutoring is offered for students who are 2nd – 5th Grade. There are a limited number of spots available on a first come-first served basis. There are only a few more available spots in this program so fill it out in the Bergeson office on Monday, if interested. We truly appreciate the ANHS students who are providing this service to our community.

HOLIDAY MUSIC PERFORMANCES: 5TH grade choir will perform on 12/12/12 at 6:30 PM at Aliso Niguel High School gym. You are invited to hear their child perform at the Choral Area Concert at Aliso Niguel High School Gym on December 12. Students are to report to the gym no later than 5:45 PM. Doors will open for parents at 6:15 PM. The show will begin at 6:30 PM. The dress requirement for students is festive clothing in holiday colors. Avoid yellow, orange and brown. Wear what is in the closet and is temperature comfortable. Please also provide a medium sized candy bar of choice to be used as a prop for one of their favorite songs.

LAGUNA NIGUEL HOLIDAY PARADE: Bergeson Elementary School will walk in the Laguna Niguel Parade again this year in a joint entry with the other six Laguna Niguel Elementary Schools. The parade will be held on December 8 at 10 AM. Our student council will be riding a CUSD school bus and others walking alongside. We are entry #80. Any children and parents who are interested in walking with us for the parade should meet at the sign for entry #80. Entries will be lined up near the corner of Golden Lantern and Crown Valley. Look for signs indicating entry numbers and follow them to #80. Be in place by 10 a.m. Wear Bergeson Spirit Wear or holiday colors. The parade is one mile in length. Parents who wish to watch rather than march should plan to pick their children up at the parade end at the Community Park.

AFTER SCHOOL THIS THURSDAY: We will be BBQing hotdogs and selling a hot dog meal for $3 which includes the hot dog, chips and a drink. At this time, we will take final orders for the BERGESON SPARKLE SHIRT. We need to get several more orders to meet minimum order requirement. See a sample shirt this Thursday after school and place your order. Don’t miss out. Once you see these adorable crystal adorned shirts on the students, you will wish you had one for yourself. Shirts are $25 each and available in adult sizes. They will make great gifts!

KIDS HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE ON 12/13 AND 12/14: The annual Kids Holiday Boutique is back for two days, Thursday December 13th and Friday December 14th during school hours. All items will be priced at $1. This is a perfect opportunity for children to purchase inexpensive gifts for their family members. Several volunteers are needed to help children with their purchases. Please contact Lily Cifuentes at lilycifuentes@cox.net if you can assist.

INTERNET SAFETY: District Attorney Investigator, Paul Carvo who is Orange County’s expert on Internet Safety for Children came to speak with our parents this morning and our 4th and 5th graders on Thursday. It was a very informative talk. Thank you to Tammy Orrill for organizing this for us and to Vanessa Leite for organizing the breakfast treats. For the information on what will be presented, click HERE.

ADOPT-A-FAMILY: We are collecting gift cards for families that we are adopting over the holidays. Our PTA will be donating to many local Laguna Niguel families who are in financial need. We will give a mixed donation with some grocery gift cards and some gift cards so that the family can purchase gifts for their children at the holidays. Please bring donations to our school office with our thanks for your generosity.

CONSTRUCTION: You may have noticed that there is some construction going on within a few of our buildings at Bergeson. There is water leakage under the building near K-9 and also under the building on the side of the MPR closest to Kindergarten. Most of the work will be done on weekends and after school. Mrs. Thomas’s class has been displaced because of this damage and they will now be relocated in room J-11. The instructional program here at school will not be disrupted by the work. Thank you for your patience as we complete the plumbing issues.

WICKED: Our school has a block of 100 seats for the Broadway musical, Wicked at the OC Performing Arts Center (Segerstrom Center for the Arts) on 3/10/13 at 6:30 PM, Sunday. The group discount is 10%, therefore the ticket is $73 per seat (normally $79.50) for Tier 2, rows A – G (front of the balcony). Normally we get a better educational discount but this show is more popular and therefore a smaller discount is offered to us. This is not a fundraiser; just an opportunity to share the arts with children. Make check out to SCFTA with your child’s name and classroom in the memo line. First paid get the best seats. Description from the website: Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One, born with emerald green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good makes for “the most complete—and completely satisfying—new musical in a long time” (USA Today). On Broadway and around the world, Wicked has worked its magic on critics and audiences alike. Winner of 35 major awards, including a Grammy® and three Tony® Awards, Wicked is “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” and “the defining musical of the decade” (The New York Times).

TARGET RED CARD: The holidays are here! If you are purchasing at Target stores or online, please consider signing up for the Target Red Card. With this card, you will get a discount every time you shop at Target and if you sign up Bergeson School as your school, Bergeson School also gets a donation. Here is the website where you can sign up. https://www-secure.target.com/redcard/tcoe/home

CHARACTER COUNTS ESSAY CONTEST: Nicolette Reese won the 5th grade Character Counts Essay Contest! One student was chosen from each elementary school in Laguna Niguel. The program was hosted by the Laguna Niguel Sherriff’s Dept. Nicolette has been invited to ride the float with the Laguna Niguel Sherriff’s Dept. in the Laguna Niguel Holiday Parade on December 8. Congratulations to Nicolette!

KINDERGARTEN ROUND-UP IS FEBRUARY 20: Can you believe that we’re already talking about the 2013-14 school year? Yes, we are! Kindergarten Round-Up will be held at 1 PM on February 20 which is where our new Kindergarten parents will get their registration packet. Children must be 5 years old on or before Oct. 1, 2013, to begin kindergarten in September. Mark your calendar and spread the word to your neighbors.

BOXTOPS FOR EDUCATION: As you prepare all those holiday treats in the coming weeks, take a moment to clip Boxtops for Education and Labels for Education symbols off the products you buy. Our school earns money and merchandise for those labels! Bring them in to the collection envelope in your child’s classroom. Each month, the class that collects the most will win a prize! For a list of participating products, check out http://www.boxtops4education.com/earn/clip/Brands.aspx and http://www.labelsforeducation.com/Earn-Points/Participating-Products. You are welcome to turn them in at the office or to your teacher.

SCHOOL PORTRAIT PICTURES will be delivered to your child’s classroom within the next few weeks. They will come home in your child’s backpack.

LOTS OF TARDIES THIS WEEK: Please help your child to get to school on time at 7:45 AM. We have had between 20 – 35 students tardy each day this week which is very unusual for us. Let’s help our children to form these good on-time habits from the beginning of their little lives which will benefit them for their whole life.

IN LINE ~ ON TIME: If the class is In Line ~ On Time at the beginning of our day when the bell rings at 7:45 AM, the class receives a letter. Our goal is to spell out PERFECT ATTENDANCE. When we spell it out with those 17 days where all students are In Line ~ On Time, the whole class gets a popsicle party.

Congratulations to Miss Shih and Mrs. Mainprize’s Kindergarten classes for spelling out PERFECT ATTENDANCE and getting their popsicle party this week!
