Our thoughts & prayers go out to the families in Newtown, CT. This senseless and saddening event has been very distressing today for all. Parents may be interested in supportive information on how to discuss tragic events like these with their children. Such resources are available at the following website: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/ss/cp/tragedy.asp. Purposefully, we did not discuss this tragedy at school today so that children could discuss this with their families. A natural response to school tragedies is an increased concern for the safety of our community. You should know that the Capistrano Unified School District works collaboratively with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, and other agencies, to protect our students, staff, and school communities. At Bergeson School, we are very strict about making sure that adults sign into the office when they come on campus. Please honor this policy by ALWAYS signing in at the office if you are coming onto campus during school hours. This saves our staff from running after you to ask you to come to the office. In addition, we do monthly emergency drills at school. A few times a year, these drills are “stranger on campus” drills and then other times they are fire or earthquake drills. Your child’s safety is of utmost importance to all of us. “It takes a village to raise a child”. We are thankful for our parents and the team of caring adults who care for our children at Bergeson School.

THURSDAY: Please make note that the school office will be closing at 1:45 pm on Thursday, December 20.

LOST AND FOUND: From Tuesday through Friday next week, all of our items in the Lost and Found will be hanging over the Kindergarten fence. Teachers will walk their students by all of the jackets, sweatshirts and clothing to see if they can find their items. It would be great if parents could come and check it out, too. We had a parent last year who found 8 pieces of clothing from one child on that fence! We know that you spent lots of $$ on it and we’d like to get the items back to you. On Friday afternoon, these items will be donated to a local charity.

CHANGES TO DISTRICT ACE PROGRAM IN 2013: Be watching for good news about some of the after school, fee-based classes returning after the first of the year! Flyers from approved classes (so far Academic Chess and Engineering w/ Legos) will be going home next week.

1. KINDERGARTEN ROUND-UP IS FEBRUARY 20: Can you believe that we’re already talking about the 2013-14 school year? Yes, we are! Kindergarten Round-Up will be held at 1 PM on February 20 which is where our new Kindergarten parents will get their registration packet. Children must be 5 years old on or before Oct. 1, 2013, to begin kindergarten in September. Mark your calendar and spread the word to your neighbors.

IN LINE ~ ON TIME: If the class is In Line ~ On Time at the beginning of our day when the bell rings at 7:45 AM, the class receives a letter. Our goal is to spell out PERFECT ATTENDANCE. When we spell it out with those 17 days where all students are In Line ~ On Time, the whole class gets a popsicle party.

Congratulations to Mrs. Werner’s Early Birds and Late Birds for earning their PERFECT ATTENDANCE popsicle party this week!

BERGESON SHINING STARS are Bergeson kids who do something special to give back to their community in the form of service. If your child deserves a Shining Star, the applications are in the office so that you can fill it out. Our Shining Stars get a star in the MPR all year and a cool bracelet, too.

Natalie Ruckmick – Volunteered at a local Preschool Co-op carnival to help raise funds for the Preschool.

Yasmeen and Fatimah Dibas – Cleaned up every piece of trash on the Bergeson playground and collected clothes and lunchboxes to put them in the lost and found.

Benjamin Roebuck – Filled gift-wrapped shoe boxes with toys for needy kids who don’t get Christmas presents with Operation Christmas Child.

FOOTPRINT FRIDAY continues with the collection of plastic bottles and aluminum cans. All students will receive the Bergeson Best for bringing in a bag with our thanks for your donations! Please separate your bottles and cans. It saves our Green Team lots of time!

CELEBRATION BOOKS: Do you have a special event that you’d like to celebrate? Please consider donating a book to our library in honor of your child or an event. There is a form in the office, donate $20 and your child’s name will be in the book forever. You can even pick out the book from a pre-purchased supply in the library. There will be a plaque with your child’s name on the inside cover of the book forever!
